After updating my Nf4 drivers to 6.66. (To eliminate crashing i was getting  
in a game) the problem is now present all the time in windows. it will occure  
at random intervals, donest blue screen the system just locks up.
 
I know people with the same hardware.driver configurations that have no  
problems. So i fgured it must be the OS,
 
And idears on where to look/what to do?

There are lots of gaming/video forums that might be able to help you
more directly. It's doubtful your problem is OS (WinXP) related. An
operating system is just a platform to host or run 3rd-party applications
and hardware.
 If you are having any issues with drivers and a change results in even
more issues then you can assume that's where the problem is. Trying
to isolate "Interactions" can be very difficult. It could be a combination
of drivers and games or drivers and system level drivers (Chipset). As
a general troubleshooting measure I would uninstall all video drivers &
support software. Then update your Chipset drivers and install the
latest version video package. Finally, I would update all your games
with any/all updates and patches available for it.

Thats all be done i'm afraid, by elimination windows is the oly thing left to  
be causing the problem. And the crashing is occuring more in simple windows  
tasks than in games. Any sugestions? Everything is as uptodate as it can be,

I wish I could give you a specific set of steps or ideas. Problems
like this are really very frustrating - because you've followed or
done normal troubleshooting procedures and a solution eludes
you. I'm not familiar with nF4 ( nVidia ?). I did a Google for the
string and found a number of forum hits, but none that keyed to
"lockups".  The only other thing that comes to mind is heat. I've
seen a number of cases where a video card's fan has stopped
running. The card overheats and experiences some problems.
Have you checked the card and your overall system temps to
make sure the issue isn't thermal.

Hi,
 
Random freezing w/o a stop error is usually indicative of a hardware issue,  
not a software one. One or more components is likely to be failing or has  
failed. If you overclocked the system at one point (I'm guessing, as most  
games tend to do this), then you may have permanently damaged a component.  
Even if you did not, there is still a strong chance of a hardware problem.  
The way to fix it is to either start swapping in known good components or  
take it to a pc specialist for diagnosis.

In one post you said it's windows, but in this one you say it's worst  
not that you've updated drivers..... Hate to tell you this, but it's  
drivers and not windows, or it look like it.
 
It could also be heat related, since I'm assuming that NF is a video  
card. Blow the dust out of your case, make sure that all the vents are  
clean, reload the old drivers if you have too - try it again and let us  
know.

I've gone trough the sterps of realoading drivers, and all the offencing  
ones have been replaced. In regards to the coments regarding heat, the  
crashings occure compelatly ramdonmly, and while running CS:S or Prime 95,  
even 3d mark donsnt seem to envoke the crashing. Today for example, crashing  
occured when changing tab's in firefox. So i;ve ruled out Heat.  
 
I belive any problem with windows may have come about during these steps.
Downloaded Nforce Drivers from the nVidia website, installed. Did not  
function properly. Reinstalled, same problem, Updated Bios and reinstalled,  
Same problem, however i removed the offeding firewall aplication ( Possable  
my problems are casued by a firewall?) and it worked with the crashing  
problem for a day or so.
 
I Downloaded a set of drivers from the asus website (same ones as from  
Nvidia) and these when istalled seemed to work, including the Firewall.  
However when getting these i noticed that they adviced that the 6.66 drivers  
should not be used with BIOS's lower than 1013, which i didnt not have at the  
time of installing.  
 
My theory that its not drivers comes from my cousin, who has the same  
hardware/software. Including bios and drivers as me, and does not have any of  
these issues. Howerver his latest drivers where on a fresh windows install.  
 
If i cant get this fixed my tomurow i think i'm going to try formatting. And  
checks and so on you can suggest i will carry out. Thanks. Will report back  
any progress.

I would do some hardware troubleshooting. Test the ram www.memtest.org If  
the ram passes try removing any extra devices including external ones. Leave  
just enough to boot up, video card, keyboard, mouse, one hard drive, no  
CDROM, floppy, NIC etc..Run Windows long enough to cause the crash. If it  
doesn't crash try adding things back one at a time. Try a different power  
supply. Make sure there is not an overheating problem.
 
What happens when it crashes? Does it freeze? Does it reboot? Does the mouse  
still work? Is the display OK?

test, unneeded devices, not the NIC's tho. Somone from another forum sugest  
that it may be the NV firewall, which has reportedly caused problems for alot  
of people.
 
When i crashes the display freezes, and i cannot move the mouse, the pictuer  
is fine, and everything in the computer seems to be functioning. I really  
dont think this is a hardware problem, surely if it was it would fail under  
strain? It does not.

I had the same situation described here and this is what fixed it for me:
 
1. Move your sound card to the farthest slot, away from the graphics card.
 
2. Enter the BIOS and make sure that your onboard sound is set to
"disabled", not "auto".
 
I believe the above helped the most. In addition, I did the following:
 
3. Blow out any dust with compressed air, clean all fans and heat sinks.
 
4. Remove all cards and memory chips, clean the contacts with a pencil
eraser, clean contacts with alcohol to remove eraser dust.
 
5. Blow out all slots, and replace cards and memory.
 
I can not guarantee this will help you, but I hope it does.

When it crashes press the power button once and wait. See if Windows shuts  
down. Let us know what happens. Do you get any errors in the event logs?
