Hi~

XP Pro, compaq laptop. Worked fine for two years.

Now, the Server service hangs on starting. You can see the event log entries
below. Boot the laptop, a few services start (see first listed Info event),
then nothing for 15 minutes, at which time the error is logged, then the
Server service starts, and all is well.

During that 15 minutes, the taskbar, Start menu, etc are all
unavialable--the hourglass is in effect....

I've tried the netsh ip int reset command, also the winsock reset command,
without effect.

Any ideas?

Thank you for the link, but the particular error wasn't listed.

However, deleting all printers fixed it. Another poorly handled error.

Had the same problem. This doc helped me.

Situation: Clone pc with lots of sw running on xpsp2 with all sec fixes.

System hourglassed @ startup for 13-15mins. System services reported the server service as "starting" during this period, then "hung on startup" in the system log. The server service could then be manually started.

Concluded that spooler was the problem and, rather than deleting all the printers, used info in:

Particularly:

"To resolve this issue, edit the registry to make the Spooler service dependent on the Server service. If you do so, the Spooler service does not start until the Server service is running.

To create this dependency: 1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedt32, and then click OK.
3. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler
4. Click Add Value on the Edit menu.
5. Type DependOnService in the Value Name box.
6. Click REG_MULTI_SZ in the Data Type box, and then click OK.
7. Type LanmanServer in the Data box, and then click OK.
8. Click Exit on the Registry menu to quit Registry Editor.
9. Restart your computer."

Works for me.
