I hope this is the right group for probs. concerning the adding of camera and
its software.
I have a Sony DSC W7 digi cam. It loaded ok on 98 and 2000 PRO but for some
reason it will not on XP.
I have tried via Control Panel - when I get to 'Select correct drive' my
choices are;
A:\ with nothing entered,
C:\BUILD\MACHINE\LAN\WIN2K-XP
D:\DRIVERS\SONY\USB.
Yet the software and driver disc is in drive E:\
Click OK on any choice produces a window saying 'the specified location does
not contain info about your hardware.'
If I add the disc nothing else comes up for choice to copy the manufacturers
files from.
As soon as I connect the camera the screen freezes and the cursor wont move
- crtl, alt, del does nothing either so have to hit the restart button.
The same results from Add Hardware, with or without the disc inserted.
The software disc loads OK, but having done that I still get to the point
when I plug in the cam and get the big freeze.
I have checked in D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32DRIVERS and there is an entry -
Sonydcam.sys, Modified 02.08.2005(OR 08.02.2005 for the USA), Created
04.08.2004.
I have a self/help build system - the chap who helped hasnt a clue and
neither have Sony.
As far as Sony are concerned, this model is compat with XP SP2. I didnt
think to ask if this product has a MS digital signature. There is certainly
no indication, logo etc on any of the packaging, camera etc to indicate if it
is.
I do and did as is my practice, loading with all security devices suspended,
a disc clean and defrag then reboot.
Any help would be most gratefully received

You installed as per sony instructions, I assume
You've visited sony site for any updates?
You installed with Av disabled
Sony tech usually respond with a ' format/reinstall' for an
IT/communications Co they are particularly useless!

Thanks for the reply.
Yes did all by the book.
I have searched Sony site but no luck - will phone them again.
I wouldnt say they were useless - more like c??p!
They say I have a fault with my system.
MS knowledge base has useful bit Article ID/Q293457 about scanner cameras
that do not appear in the Add Wizard. I think the prob lies there in which
case Sony should have the proper driver, a WIA or something.
Did I come into the wrong group???-it looks like it-not a lot about cameras
here.

There are probably other groups that are more specific for camera/video
problems, but it was certainly OK for you to start here. Here's a list
of all the MS newsgroups:

I don't have an answer for you, but I have a workaround. Buy a USB card
reader. Then you don't need to install any Sony drivers or software, or
have your camera on when you are trying to transfer pictures. The card
readers are fairly inexpensive - $20-30 USD - and you don't need any
drivers for XP. Just plug the reader into a USB port, put in your
camera's memory card, and XP will see the reader as a removal drive.
Then just copy the pictures off the card (don't "move"!) onto your hard
drive. After the pictures are where you want them, delete them from the
memory card and you're good to go.

Thank you for the very nice post. You're not allowed to call yourself an
idiot, though. Just because you don't know this tech stuff doesn't mean
you're stupid; it just means you don't know the tech stuff. Everybody
was a newbie once.

I couldn't tell from your post but did you try installing the driver
and software from the disc to your computer first. Then reboot,
connect the camera and it should then say "New hardware found" and
continue with installing the drivers by itself? That is how I had to
install my printer and seemed to work ok.

Hi Scott
Your input is appreciated - tried as you said
Loaded disc (after a system cleanup as norm)
Loaded driver etc
Restart/boot
Switched on cam - plugged in the usb and Desktop froze just like before.
The instructions on the disc cover and in booklet both say disc is for
WIN98, 98SE, 2000 & ME - disc not required for XP.
Many thanks - it was certainly worth a try.
Im still waiting a phone call and email reply from Sony but I aint holding
my breath.
Suppose it might be stretching the odds to find a Sony tech bloke in this
discussion group. But would they show themselves??
I shall keep looking until my b'day at end of month. If no solution by then
I will go with Malke's suggestion
