Hi All,

My quest for telecommunications on the Palm continues.

I have two models of Palm that I am looking at solutions for;
Tungsten|C & Tungsten|T3.

The Tungsten|C worked well at my office where I have wi-fi. I did web
browsing with WebPro, e-mail with Eudora and news groups with TuNews.
The problems started when I took the Palm out into the field. I've hit
about a dozen hotspots, and have had nothing but trouble. Some of the
places, the signal strength never got out of the red zone for signal
strength. I of course like the speed of wi-fi, but first you have to
find a hotspot then you have to hope that the signal strength is high
enough to make a connection. I've basically decided that wi-fi is a
novelty on the Palm.

The next thing I tried was a cellular phone /w built in modem. it took
about 1045hrs to get the Palm set up with a Motorola v500 GSM phone
(Ended up that one of the two phones that I bought was defective and
of course that is the one that I chose to use for the initial test
<LOL> ). I have the AT&T Wireless unlimited Internet. There manual say
115Kb, I have been getting between 95 - 100Kb download speeds (rough
estimate based on large page downloads. For the last two days, I have
been using it where-ever I happened to be at the time. I travel quite
a bit and will be on the road later this month, so I will be able to
really put the system through it paces then. There are two major
problems I have with the Tungsten|T3 & Motorola v500 via Bluetooth.
The first is speed. At home using Tungsten|C's wi-fi, I can get speeds
of up to 300Kb. The Tungsten|T3 is getting a 1/4 to a 1/3 the speed.
The other problem is that Bluetooth eats up the battery quite a bit.
When I got home tonight. I had less than 10% charge left in the Palm.
I have some battery sleds so I would have been okay if I needed to use
the Palm more in the field.

Having said that, I think the ideal would be a wi-fi card for the
Tungsten|T3 so that when a good signal exist, could use wi-fi if not
switch over to using the cell phone. Of course the problem would be to
tell clients who have Tungsten|C that they will need to sell it and
buy a Tungsten|T3 (the Tungsten|T5 is to new and untested by me so I
can't really recommend it. I will buy one when CompUSA has them in
stock) and wi-fi card. Or is there a Bluetooth card for the Tungsten|C?

It is to early to say what I will recommend for telecommunications
with the Palm, but it will be fun finding the solution. I will say
this, my laptop has wi-fi. I don't use it very often. I do have a
T-Mobile Sierra AirCard 750 and there Unlimited Internet for $30US a
month. I have found that some hotels are putting in wi-fi Internet (at
$10US a day to $45US a week) so wi-fi will grow and the number of
hotspots will increase.

If you have any Palm telecommunications solutions, I would like to
hear about them.

There is a WiFi card that work with the T3 and the T5 from PalmOne. Another
option for the T3 (and other Palms) is the Enfora WiFi case. It has it's own
battery to run the WiFi hardware built-in. It's a bit bulky though as it's
essentially a small fold over notebook that houses the WiFi hardware and the
T3.

Bluetooth with a phone works great. There are new EDGE enabled phones that
will give you better throughput than basic GPRS service.

All of these solutions suffer from battery life issues. I don't know why my
Sony Ericsson phone, which has a smaller battery, has better battery life
than my PDA? (Well actually I do know why, but I don't understand why the
PDA manufacturers can't do a better job). Power-to-Go battery sleds are
great for Universal Connector Palms. There are also devices which use
standard batteries such as 9v alkalines that can charge a Palm too. (They
are somewhat more convienent for trips where you may not be near a power
source for several days. You just have to take more batteries along with
you.)

Cheers

Hi All,

I have been using the Motorola v505 and Tungsten|T3 for a couple of
weeks now, and am satisfied with the connection and download speed for
e-mail. What I am not happy with is the "Unlimited Internet" package
that AT&T Wireless offers. The only way it is truly unlimited is if
you use a Treo if you go from PDA to cellular phone, you are charged
per Kb for the connection.

For my personal use, I will stick with my HP Pavilion zd7010us laptop
and T-Mobiles GSM "Unlimited Internet" access. T-Mobiles unlimited
access is truly unlimited. I have been using the service for about a
year now and my bill is always $34US (includes insurance on the PC-Card).

I will recommend the cellular phone & Palm to clients who don't want
to use laptops, but I will make sure they understand the cost involved.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph

Supposedly the way to get around this is to get the ATT Unlimited plan (I
think it's $24.99) and then see if ATT can determine if you are using the
phone with a PDA/PC. I don't see how they can really determine that you are
using the phone to connect to another device, but maybe someone here in the
group can explain how they might do this.

Don't get me wrong, I am not necessarily advocating that you violate the
terms and conditions of the ATT contract, just offering an observation as to
whether or not they can enforce them.

Cheers
TC
