it's my predicament. I want to upgrade my current rig but in a way that I can transfer some things to the next rig. I will eventually move from the 754 to the 939. I really want to buy 2 gigs RAM now. I was thinking of 2 crucial sticks DDR400 1 gig each. I know I will have to switch to a PCIe board and possibly SATAII later, but somet things carry over like a nice PSU, LCD display, IDE HD's etc. In your opinions, will DDR offer excellent performance possibilities with future upgrade potential in the next year?

DDR2 is here to stay, which means that most likely AMD will begin to support DDR2 within the next few years, though they have not formally announced any DDR2 support yet.

If you upgrade to a new AMD system you will need to get DDR. But if you go with a new Intel based system, then you should get DDR2.

i am a faithful AMD dude. but DDR2 slots are not backwards compatible with DDR, no???

There's really no need to move from S754 to S939 as the performance are virtually the same.
Dual-channel does pratically nothing for Ahtlon64.

The best upgrade for you right now is to buy 2x512MB and sell your 2x256.

The slot between the two are physically different.

i am anticipating a move to dual core. in any event, 2X512? why not 2X1024? as it is, I don't get dual channel anyhow, but moving, eventually, to the new socket I know dual channel will be useful.

Dual channel is less than a 5% performance advantage over single channel. The s754 has a 10% performance advantage due to clocking 200Mhz faster. It's a waste of money to go s939 for you.

When do you plan on going dual core? AMD is supposed to adopt DDR2 in '06 (Socket M if i remember correctly). It would suck for you to go 939/DDR in anticipation of a dual core upgrade sometime in the future and by then have a new socket released by the time you go dual core. Enjoy your current rig and when IT doesn't do what you need it to do, then upgrade.

but i thought dual core would be backwards compatible with socket 939.

It is. The point is that why buy parts for no performance increase now in order to do an upgrade to dual core later. When you do upgrade to dual core, there will be newer/shinier/more technologically advanced pieces of equipment to go with that new dual core CPU.

That 3400 s754 will be as fast or faster than a 3500+.

Upgrading just for dual core=insane

You'd be better off with Socket M when time comes.

well, the thing is you suggest 2X512 but that cost just as much as 1 gig on one stick. why not do that? one oddity of my MOBO is that it will only run DDR with 4 banks total. though I have 3 slots, I must use them wisely.

anywho, it would appear that one of the best full proof upgrades (in the spirit of THG's most recent article) would be a 300 gig HD for mass storage. It would appear IDE ain't going anywhere for a while and I don't see any storage devices for PCIeX4 sockets either. no doubt when they do come out, they'll cost an arm and a leg.

With a s754 I would recommend 1X1024MB. It has the best potential for OC and there is no performance hit since it can't do dual channel for the memory.

I don't know why I said that, but Rugger picked up from my posts in other threads nicely.
