Hi Folks:

Starting a new thread on this because I need ideas:

Update to my MN700 firmware went well. However, when I updated the driver
for the MN 720
to the new version (3.60.7.0), my signal degraded from very good to poor.
Rolling back to the older
driver restores signal quality. I have tried turning off WEP and also
reinstalling the driver several times
with the same result. Everything is the same as it was before the update
was applied. Same location,
same key, etc.

I don't know whether it matters or not that I'm using an older driver,
(happens all the time in this business) but
was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Don't know if it's the fault
of the driver (appears it is) or perhaps
just my system.

are you referring to the system tray notifications on the connection
signal or have you actually noticed that your connectivity has
degraded significantly?

Hi:

Actually both. The system tray notification shows the signal to be "poor".
When the signal is shown as "poor", I can not connect to the internet.
Changing
(rolling back) the driver to the previous version re-establishes a "very
good" signal
and I can access the internet once more. So it appears the driver is
the cause. But why? I've tried various settings (changing key, no key,
different channel, etc) to no avail.

you mention WEP, what happens if you try WPA instead?

I tried WPA as you suggested. With WPA turned on and the new driver
installed, the signal degrades to almost zero strength. Doesn't look like
that's going to work.

However, I tried turning off WEP altogether and was finally able to
establish a "very good" signal strength using the newer driver. Although
it didn't function at the full 54mbs but rather at 48mbs. Turn WEP back on
and the signal strength degrades to "poor". With the older driver
installed, I can leave WEP (64bit) turned on and maintain a "very good" to
"excellent" signal strength at the full 54mbs between the MN 700 and the MN
720.

Unless there's something I'm overlooking it looks like the older driver is
better. (at least for me)

Hi:

Sure. It's a Toshiba Notebook Satellite Model 1135-S1553. Intel P-IV
Celeron Mobile CPU at 2.4Ghz, 512mb system memory, XP Home SP-1 plus
updates. BIOS is latest (ver 1.71A Sep 2003) The MN 720 is plugged into
the bus card slot. The Base Station MN 700 is located in another part of
my home close to my desktop PC. Distance between the base station and the
notebook is about 30 feet straight line through the walls.

With the new driver installed: As I move closer to the base station the
signal quality improves. As I move back to my working room which as I
explained previously was about 30 feet through the house walls (two walls)
from the base station, the signal quality degrades until finally lost.

Old driver installed: Doesn't matter where I am in the house, the signal
remains fairly constant always showing "very good". I even tried it in my
third bathroom which is a greater distance and through four walls.

WEP turned on (64 bit) in both cases.
