Hello, I was reading a closed message-string about UPS power, when a comment was made that a UPS also offers surge protection....leading to the conclusion that a separate surge protector was not needed. My reason for posting this note is that most surge protectors and/or UPS's offering surge protection provide such protection via Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) that degrade over time as they are hit, and hit with surges. The important point is that, if you have no other surge protection other than a UPS, you may be providing no surge protection at all.....and, if you were able to prove that your UPSs MOVs are inactive (but still passing voltage to your equipment) you would need to replace the entire UPS to regain the surge protection. Or, when you buy a new UPS, install a separate; i.e...less expensive, surge protector between the UPS and the electical outlet.

Yes, what you read is correct. And, it is easier to check the UPS part, and not the surge protection part.

I would say, if you invest in a UPS system, do install a separate (maybe redundant) surge protector. They are cheap compared to the protection they provide.
