I think im posting this in the right place. I was curious if one can host a webpage from their own personal computer. i.e., i'd like to post a couple of pictures and some content on the web wihout having to buy some hosting package from say, yahoo or something.

For FREE that is :-)

If possible, do I get to choose a unique webpage address? Also, what tools do i need to host the page.

I'm not a very experieced person when it comes to software related stuff, so sorry for any misunderstanding cause up there.

There's an incredible amount of information on this subject on the Internet, as you might imagine.

Searching the subject line, "How do I make a web page?" on Google Advanced Search turned up 4,970,000 <A HREF="http://www.google.com/search?as_q=How+Do+I+Make+a+Web+Page&num=100&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=lang_en&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images" target="_new">pages</A>.

What I'm trying to demonstrate is the power of a search engine for researching a subject that is unfamiliar to you.

You could end up with literally thousands of responses to a set of questions like this, each completely different, due to the proliferation of web hosts, tools, and places on the Internet where you can register a unique domain name and email address for a small, annual fee.

For example, the tools can range from using HTML in Notepad, to using an application like <A HREF="http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/" target="_new">Macromedia Dreamweaver MX</A> to build something truly amazing.

The possibilities are endless, even for a small web page with limited content.

If you want to host from your computer, though, be aware that your upload speeds are going to limit your visitors load times.

Here's some links that can help as well. With my host being down, people have been thrashing them and trying to find alternatives. Only a few have gotten temp hosting (like me for my status site) until they're back up, which should be soon.

I think <A HREF="http://www.godaddy.com" target="_new">GoDaddy</A> is the best place to buy domain names, but maybe someone will correct me on that.

Good luck, and let us know which editor you use. I got some links for you that might help. But, I first used Frontpage, but switched to Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is more robust and versatile, IMO. At first, it was tough. Frontpage was so easy because it was like Word. But, it inserted a lot of trash that probably wasn't compatible or choking it with another browser. With Dreamweaver, I haven't had any complaints.

I would suggest Cyberwings, but it'll cost more than before when I got in on the deal. If you wanna see what's going on with them, just go to their <A HREF="http://www.cyberwings.com" target="_new">website</A>. It's not much because they're in a rebuilding project, but when it's up, the prices should be there somewhere.
