I can buy a LaCie external dvd writer (slim) for 130 UK pounds (including shipping).

This is the model that I want http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Produ [...] roupID=169 and as far as I can tell it is the same as the LaCie DVD-Writer D2.

What I'd like to know is wether anyone has this or D2 and what are your impressions of them?

The best I can tell you is that LaCie DVD Writers are made by NEC...and the 8X and 16X are both very good.

How about the disc compatibility of the NECs?

I usually use sony discs or verbatim (DVD-Rs both).

The compatiblity of nec dvd burner is great.

I did some more research but I'm not quite sure if I hould buy it. I know that NEC provides the drives, but I haven't seen any NEC Slim drives so far and apparently some of the slim drives LaCie uses are Matsuhita(sp?).

Although I really want a Slim external DVD-Writer, I need to know if you really know for sure that NEC provides the drive for the Slim writer.

Considering that Matsushita Electric Industrial Co is a conglomerate that known for it's Panasonic products as well as Kenmore appliances, it's not a bad company. They were quite the 'big player' in the disk and disc drive communities for a long time.

Whether your drive is LaCie (NEC) or LaCie (Matsushita), it probably won't matter as both would be from solid manufacturers.

Sony makes a pretty solid DVD R/W/CDRW combo drive that comes in a slim model and has both firewire and USB options.

Thanks to everyone. I finally bought the LaCie Slim by F.A. Porsche.

It's based on the NEC 6500 and I've burned several no-brand dvds of data and they all worked excellently (burned at 2.0x)

So far I reccomend the drive to anyone that wants an external DVD-Writer for his/her laptop.

It comes with 2 cds containing Easy CD-DVD Creator V6 and Easy Media Creator V7(has DL-Burn capabilities), a USB Cable, an Adaptor and a USB cable that can provide power to the Writer if you don't have a plug to use the adaptor (didn't try this yet).

All in all I'm pleased with it so far.

Nice follow-up. Often folks who ask questions never post a roll-up as to what course of action was taken. Now others can benefit from your research and investment.
