Forum Tom's Guide : Tell Us Hard drive speed

does a hard drive speed really matter for the avaerage computer user? I have a Dell Inspiron 1200- -running Windows XP. It came with a 30 gig HD @ 5400 RPM. Would it really make a big difference to go to a 60 gig HD at 4200 RPM.
Remember this is an average user not really needing the big burst of speed. Not into a lot of special extras.
Another thing.
Can I change the Ultra ATA HD with an ATA HD?

A hdd with 5400rpm is faster than an hdd with 4200rpm,The main difference is the loading times taken by these drives!

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

My 1st question is. Which is the purpose of the disk?, surf the web, word, excel, power point...

The 2nd question is. Do you need big space? or not too much.
