I have a Gateway MX7120 with an ATI X300M video. Periodically, the display will flicker and go dark. I can just barely see the display and if I close the lid and reopen the lid the display is good. Is the back light going bad or the display croaking out.

If you can still see what's on screen, even if the display seems to be off, it's the backlight.

contact gateway to see if they have a replacement lcd. it depends on how much money you have available for a new laptop, versus how much this one is worth to you.
replacing a screen is easy for me, but ive taken apart many, many notebooks. not so easy for a beginner.
