The 4000 family has produced good quality phones. It seems that the
4920 has reduced in overall quality from the previous versions due to
poor earpiece quality.

Is this either a questionable personal viewpoint of this reviewer, or
is it possible, separately, that some kind of fix has been produced to
improve the earpiece quality - since the review first appeared ?

I appreciate you posting this as it is of considerable interest to me
at this time. I don't have an answer, myself, but would greatly
appreciate any responses that might be forthcoming, as I am about to
consider this phone ('have a 4700 right now) for the large number of
contacts the 4920 holds, and would not want to not be comfortable with
the sound quality.

Hi Larry, thanks, I am the original poster. ,I actully have a 4700,
but the capacity for utilization of a much larger number of contacts
and the newer features of the 4920 - and that my 4700 has been amply
beat up - that bluetooth seems so distant from Sprints present lineup
- and that Sprint will provide me with most of the cost of a new phone
leads me to the next generation.

However if the 4920 is a degrade or downgrade from the 4700, in terms
of sound, then I do pause.

I did not know that software could play such a role in acousitcs. On
this point I am all ears (pardon the pun)

I am hoping for responses guidance as I do not want to make the resign
up or go in that direction if the 4920 is an acoustic problem.

Sanyo did release a software update for the 4920 that was supposed to
reduce or eliminate an echo problem on the earpiece that exsisted when
the phone was first released. The new version is 1.011SP.

I read the review on sprintusers.com. I would have to disagree with
the reviewer. I think the 4920 sounds better than the both the 8200 &
7300 but of course that's just my opinion. These things are sometimes
very subjective.

Wow, Larry, thanks. This is the info / type of info that I have been
looking for. Any further such is quite welcomed. It has been my
impression that what used to be sometimes called "candybar" phones,
such as the 4700, (the 4920 might be too reduced in size to be
considered a "candybar" phone) are, while less compact and perhaps
cool than clamshell phones, better at acoustics and much better at
reception.
And bluetooth seems to be amazingly distant from Sprint's plan. And
there seems to be a Sprint tower near my residence. Thus the interest
in the 4920.
