Hi,

I've just gone to charge up my HBH-35 headset, which hasn't been used
for a couple of months, and it won't charge!

Instead of the solid red light I get a flashing red light and the
battery isn't charging at all.

Anyone know what the problem might be? Has it just gone so flat that it
won't charge? Is there anything I can do or is it toast?

Sounds like it.

Toast.

I had the same thing happen to an old HBH-30. Lifespan is limited by the
battery technology.

Batteries need a base level charge or it'll die. That's my experience
too. However, a dealer once resurrected a rechargeable battery by
putting a higher current/voltage in to "jump" start it. It did work, as
if to just get to a certain base level.

You were lucky. It's usually more a matter of cell inversion caused by
excessive discharge, which is often completely fatal.

Many can be resurrected if you get a surface charge on them
For example the MAHA 777 II chargers won't give up on a battery until
it is tried charging it at 850ma for 3 minutes. However I have some 30
and 15 minute AA chargers that refuse to charge a truely dead NiMh or
NiCd.

For those, I connect them up to a lab supply set for 1 amp at 1.25
volts. Takes about 15 seconds for the current to come down from the 1
amp limit to about 30ma. Once that has been done to them, they charge
just fine in a fast charger.

We have a lab PSU at work I could try but presumably I can't just run
this through the power terminals on the headset and thus through the
internal circuitry, I'd have to remove the battery somehow and connect
the supply directly to it?

Right, well I've just given this a try.

Noticed the SE charger is rated at 5.1v/450ma and my Nokia charger is
5.7v/800ma so I decided to give it a bash using the Nokia charger and
some bits of wire.

Amazingly as soon as I made contact with the terminals I got the solid
red light which should indicate charging. I left it connected to the
Nokia charger for about 2 mins and then plugged the SE charger back in
and I now have a solid red light from that too.

Will have to wait to see if it charges and works but fingers crossed
this has sorted it. Many thanks Matt

Yes.

alternatively, you can keep trying to charge it with the supplied
charger. Connect, when it starts to flash, disconnect, wait a minute
and try again. It may take 10-20 attempts to get enough charge on it
to properly charge. I've done that with AA NiMh's and a fast charger.
