hi guys,
have a quick question!!
I just installed Red Hat 7, on compaq presario 1925 [i had a netgear ethernet pcmcia card, which works perfectly],
i have a lan.. w 2 other computers, i use Linksys cable/dsl router, and on windows its fine.. czu it is using a dhcp.. so wen i goto ipconfig and renew the ip.. it automaticaly configures on the computer. but on linux.. i couldnt do renew ip.. as i mentioend its red hat 7. IT can ping the other comps on the network, and even sees the router itself.

can someone tell me please how do i tell it that the gateway is the router.. and the internet is outside :-(
can someone help me out please.. i am using the red hat network configurator .. it has 4 tabs [names/hosts/interfaces/routing] can someone please tell me how i set that up..
as mentioned before.. from what i put into the config.. it can see the network.. but i am not able to work w internet..
thank you

Here's some help:

I don't know what exactly you mean by "red hat network configurator", but I would suggest using 'netconf' or 'linuxconf'. Netconf is just a sub-set of the linuxconf features relating to networking. A note - some of the sections may be named slightly different, as I am using a newer version of linuxconf than RH7.0, but the ideas are the same.

To set the default gateway, set 'Routing and Gateways | Defaults |Default Gateway' to the ip of your router.

then go to 'Name server specification' to name the ip's of the DNS servers you want to use (either at your isp, or you can configure linux to be its own name server - a cool thing to do :-) )

now go in 'Host name search path', and make sure it is set to "hosts, dns"

This should make your internet work (if not right away, then after a reboot)

Regarding dhcp, chances are it is the program "pump" that is in control of the nic. Run "pstree" and see if there is an entry called "pump". To get dhcp lease information, run "pump -s". To renew a lease on the default interface, eth0, run "pump -R". if the nic is not eth0, also give the parameter "-i ethX" to pump.

you can also check the satus of all interfaces on the system by running ifconfig.

cheers!

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.
