I'm trying to make recordings from CD (or tape) and I don't seem to be able
to get Cool Edit to capture the audio. It must be some computer
configuration issue. Any suggestions?

There is in Cool Edit Pro (and probably in other versions) under
Options/Device_Order a panel for Recording Devices. The entry really
should be your sound card which means that any problems hearing the CD
should be sound card related rather than Cool Edit.

What are you using, a sound card or a motherboard chip? What is the make
and model?

There are too many variations to make any but the most generic
suggestions. If you can tell us exactly what sound hardware and
operating system you are using, we might be able to offer some-
thing useful.

Adobe consumed Syntrillium several years ago. Where did you
get Cool Edit?

if you are recording from a built in cd player you would be much better off
by 'ripping' the cd using some ripping software
i.e. taking a direct digital copy, it saves the audio passing through the
sound card electronics

I bought Cool Edit from Syntrillium some time ago.
This is an XP Home machine with VIA Technologies Vinyl AC97 on the main
board
The only ripping software that works is MS Media Player which generates .wma
files. I don't know how to open these files in Cool Edit. Does anyone?
I tried Roxio Audio Central in EZ CD Creator 6 package and it stalls the
system - useless.

Try EZ CD creator again, but this time before you do;

Disbale the service named IMAPI CD-Burning COM service.
Reboot.

EZ CD creator should work now. If not, download the free trial version
of Nero at www.nero.com.

What does that mean? What other ripping software have you
tried? How did they fail? This seems very suspicious to me.
There are many ripping applications availabe (many for free)
which rip to WAV.

I don't know how to open these files in Cool Edit.

WMA is a release-only format, it was not made for production.
Suggest sticking with WAV, etc.
