HI all. I'm thinking about buying a FTA receiver. Probably the Fortec Ultra.
I've never used an fta receiver before and would like to know what I can
expect to have to do once I buy this unit.
I assume I'll have to buy a dish for it also.
I understand I won't have any program guide.
I guess what I would like to know is if I just point the dish at a satellite
and do a scan on the receiver and that's it. Or do I need to move the dish
to other satellites from time to time.
I'm just not sure what to expect by going this route.

Don't buy any receiver until we see what DN does to the rest of there
programming.

So it's not worth getting an fta receiver unless you're using it for
DN? I was under the assumption that you could receive free, legal
programming.

Do you guys have dishes on a motor drive or anything fancy like that?
Or do you just have it pointed at one sat?

i have mine hooked up to a bud (10ft c band dish and Ku), but you can get
away with smaller dishes for Ku only and you can park it on one satellite if
you like. there is lots of free stuff on g10r Ku.
http://www.lyngsat.com/america.html
lists a pretty much up to date list of what is around. don't buy for any
particular channel it maybe there today and gone tomorrow. you want to look
for DVB in the clear on the listings.

have fun, there is lots of stuff to look at.

I have mine attached to a 1 meter Ku Dish on a SG2100 H to H motor. It
works well. I use a broad band (11.7 to 12.7 Ghz), .4 db noise figure LNB.
I have some tracking issues, but I believe it is an issue with the antenna.

Well, it doesn't look like a C-Band dish is an option for me because of the
size. Can I use a small 18" - 24" KU band dish like the ones for dishnet or
bell expressvu?

No.The minimum size is 30",but you would best to use a 1 Meter Ku band band
dish. You have to remember that the DBS signals are more powerful, therefore a
smaller dish can be used. However, the ku band satellites used for regular
transmissions are not as powerful, thereby requiring a larger dish.
