Hello,

I currently have dtv, but it doesn't offer the digital suite of MTV
that we used to enjoy from Comcast digital, which isn't

offered in our new residence which is why we had to resort to dtv. Ive
learned that the digital suite (MTV Suite:
- MTV2
- MTV Español
- MTV X
- VH1 Classic
- VH1 Soul
- VH1 Country) is offered through c band packages which requires the
bigger dish than the directv dish of course. My prefers

the directv which is fine, and I wanted to get the service for one
room, but the thing is that she doesn't want that big dish

in the backyard. (I guess you see whose running things out here!) I am
willing to get the 4dtv receiver but am hoping that

there is an alternative to that huge dish that has to go out in the
yard. What would happen if I used the 4dtv receiver in

conjunction with the dtv dish? Here is the satellite info for these
channels

that these channels are found on

For 4DTV C-Band you will need a big dish, 7.5 feet or larger. a 10
foot or larger dish is recommended, you may have problems receiving
those channels with a dish smaller than 10'.

First of all,WHERE are you located? In GENERAL,the closer you are to
Denver,CO the better your tunability to C-Band signals.Doubly so for
digital ones.It is not enough just to detect a digital signal as opposed
to analog,but the receiver software has "cutoff" QUALITY values you must
establish to receive a signal as well.These are determined by a
so-called "QUALITY NUMBER RANGE".I have found that a quality number of
15 is necessary to have a stable signal.This is the low end.99 is the
high end.The higher the Q-number,the better the signal "lock" even in
bad weather.
Having said that,the second thing you should is consult an EIRP map
(Effective Irradiated Power) on the downlink side for the RESPECTIVE
satellite you wish to tune.Different satellites have differing downlink
"signatures" depending on YOUR location,the fringe power levels at your
location,whether there are side-lobe patterns and so-on.The map can help
you decide what size dish you need.
If you are close to one of the "lines" on the map with a higher dB
value,the smaller the dish size you can get away with.
However,with C-Band,in my opinion,the SMALLEST I have ever seen used is
a 6 foot diameter dish which is SOLID (not mesh).I would not go smaller
than a 6 foot solid dish.If you go with mesh dishes,you will have to
have a higher diameter.And the 6 footers are not on the fringe areas of
the map either.
Sorry,but C-Band dictates larger size dishes.10 foot mesh dishes are
considered industry standard.Lower sizes are a deviation.

Unless you can convince her to accept a 10' dish for the sake of your
programming (don't even use the 7.5' dish unless it's the clincher in
the barganing), you have a problem. A big dish is not an option with a
4DTV receiver...it is mandatory. Go to satforums.com and 4DTV Rocks
area for more information...

Thanks for your repsonse. I am in Rio Rancho, NM, 430 miles south of
Denver. It looks like I, going to have to settle for the big dish. Im
sure sometime in the future there will be more capabilitites for the
smaller dish.

Why do people say that? I have a 7.5' dish and it works perfectly. Strong
signals on C Analog and Digital 4D. I don't have Ku yet but I'm sure it will
work just fine with a 7.5' dish.

Dishes smaller than 10' can suffer from sidelobe interference
on some digital feeds. HBO/Max digitals on G1 quite often
display the problem, if it effects your system. Larger dishes
have a smaller viewing angle (cone of acceptance) than smaller
dishes. Smaller dishes pick up more of the signal from adjacent
satellites than larger dishes.

If you can receive all of the digital HBO/Max channels with no
problems you did a very good job of installing your dish. There
are people out there that cannot receive those channels with a
7.5' dish no matter how well the dish is peaked.

I see. Well I don't have any paid subscription channels. I only watch the
freebies and that could be why I have never had a problem with my wimpy 7.5'
dish.

You do not need a subscription to check the digital quality
level. All you need is a 4DTV.

I live in Seattle,WA and have a 7-1/2 foot mest dish. It's mounted on my
roof. I get all of the 4DTV digital signals fine. I'm almost 900 miles
northwest of Denver. You will certainly get better signal quality with a 10
foot dish, but I do not have any tiling artifacts that would suggest I need
a bigger dish.
