got the following email today and really am at a loss here in regard to helping any ideas or suggestions will be passed along if you can help

Oh, and btw, by the third attempt (16x different media) I had already rebooted my computer and close every single program on my PC before doing the burn. Any ideas?

Why did he just have 5 coaster all of a sudden? Did he switch CDR brands when it was working before? Also, what kind of CD writer does he have? Maybe he needs a firmware update or something.

Still thinking, though....

Just a stab in the dark. Does this person have a motherboard with a Via chipset, and specifically one with the 686B southbridge? If he/she does, he/she might be experiencing the data corruption bug. The fix would be the PCI Latency Patch by George Breese. You can read about both at Viahardware.com. Late versions of the Via 4-in-1 drivers (4.32 and later) are also supposed to fix the problem.
