I have DirecTivo now and will be moving shortly and want to get HD programming. What is necessary to go from what I have
now to HD programming as far as the components I will need? I have a HD TV so can I get HD programming from Direct TV
and still use my DVR to record the signals in analog, or do I have to buy a HD DVR as well ? And will I need an antenna
to get local OTA HD ?


All help greatly appreciated.

All you need is an DirecTV HD receiver.

DirecTiVos record the digital bitstream from DirecTV...they don't convert
to analog. Otherwise, though, you are just fine. I did this same thing
for a long time until DirecTV released the HD DirecTiVo...I used the HDVR2
to record the SD channels, and the RCA DTC-100 to view the HD channels.

You only need an HD DirecTiVo if you want to record HD. If you are fine
with watching only, then you don't need one. I advise you get one, though,
because it increases the amount of HD you can watch by a lot.

To get locals, yes, you will. To get some OTA networks...maybe not.
Depending on where you live, you might be eligible to receive either the
New York or Los Angeles big-4 (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) locals in HD via the
satellite.

Don't waste the $1,000. It will be obsolete soon. What these Tivo
rumpswabs won't tell you is the new DTV sats going up will not be
compatible with HD Tivo's.

It's not a waste - you get a HD DVR by spending the money. When will it
be obsolete? 2009? 2015? What's your definition of obsolete? If it is
'to stop working', it's going to be _a long_ time before it stops working
as an MPEG2 HD DVR since MPEG2 HD is going to be around for a long time.

No one disagrees about the new DTV sats going up - the new sats are MPEG4
and all the current HD DVRs are MPEG2. This means in the future, you will
be able to get the exact same HD feeds you are getting today, but not the
new ones from these new sats. They have also made the claim there will be
a trade-in program to trade-in your MPEG2 HD DVR for an MPEG4 HD DVR.
Regardless, this doesn't make the current model obsolete.

So what? Who cares what will be obsolete in the future... probably
everything. With my HD Tivo I get to record hidef shows RIGHT NOW. That's
enough to light my fire

Who made that "trade in" claim? Care to cite a reference? Besides,
according to you tivo rumpswabs the new NDS dvr is vaporware that will
never work, right?

I bet the OP will be real thrilled to shell out $1,000 and as DTV
rolls out more + more HD channels he can't record them.
