Are there any differences among USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet adaptors? Which
models have worked for you?

I am looking for the lowest cost unit that will work (including the USB
cable).

I plan to connect to an existing, wired network in order to use TTG. (I
feel that there is enough EMF radiation bombarding me without my adding
wireless devices to the house).

I've used the D-Link DUB-E100 (USB 2.0) w/ great success, w/ both my Toshiba
SD-H400 and Humax DRT-800 units. Got a pair of these off eBay a couple
months ago for $30 shipped. That's a pretty good deal. In store (Fry's,
Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.), you'll usually see these selling for $30, and
on a very rare ocassion on sale, maybe $20.

I like the DUB-E100 because it has an integrated USB cable (at least the
most recent version, an older version does not). A primary competitor,
Netgear FA120 also has an integrated cable, but hard to find for <$30. Just
my preference, but I find that the units w/ the non-integrated cable tends
to slip out with excessive movement. The other option is the Linksys
USB200M, small and cosmetically appealing, however, I find it to be a bit
flimsy, some people love it, but I'd worry about it holding up over the long
haul (maybe not as big an issue for a static Tivo unit, but for a portable
laptop, not something I liked to risk).

In terms of performance, while I haven't compared each directly, usually
there's no really difference, not unless there's some known problem/bug,
which I've not heard of with any of these products. The decision really
comes down mostly to cost and preferred features/ergonomics.

My preferences, in order:

1) D-Link DUB-E100 (integrated cable, good deals on eBay w/ some research
and patience, somewhat bulky, cosmetically least appealing).
2) Netgear (integrated cable, hard to find for <$30, little less bulky then
DUB-E100, cosmetically OK).
3) Linksys USB200M (no cable, plugs directly into USB port, small and
portable, cosmetically most appealing (imo), been sold for $20 (or less) AR
several times).

Just a small nit: The Linksys USB200M does, or should, have a short USB
extension cable that connects the dongle to the USB port on the TiVo. You
don't have to plug the adapter directly into the USB port.

I bought a USB200M from Staples a few months ago. The extension cable was
missing from the box but was prominently displayed on the package. I took
it back and exchanged the adapter for a complete set.
