I'm pretty new to this and I'm hoping this is just a setup issue and not a
hardware limitation but figured the folks here should know.

Here's my setup:

Digital cable box
Tivo series2 box
All wired through to home theater receiver

I've used the TivoToGo to record stuff and burn to DVD without a problem but
I've lost the 5.1 sound - seems to be just stereo.

Currently I'm just using the coax cable in/out on the back of my cable box
and coax in to the tivo and the composite and L/R channels out of the tivo
unit which I suspect is part of the issue but since there is no digital in
to the tivo unit am I out of luck? Should I use the composite and L/R
channels out of the digital cable box instead? What about the digital
output?

If the standard tivo unit can't handle this are their other manufacturers
that support this?

First thing to do is check and see if your cable box even outputs stereo on
the RF out. Many do not, and almost no consumer devices do either.

2nd, you will not get 5.1 audio with a Standalone TiVo. I don't know of any
standalone DVRs that record 5.1. Dolby Pro Logic is passed on stereo
signals, but 5.1 (Dolby Digital) is not.

Nope, the only way to get the dd is to grab it directly from the cable
box, if you could find a device to capture it, that is (I don't know of
one). Or you could get directv, but then you lose your tivotogo. Lose
lose, I'm afraid.

Get them on dvd.

If the OP is technically inclined then hacking a Directivo (with Directv
service of course) would enable him to get what he wants. But nothing
out of the box will do it, as you say.

Archaic Tivo technology cannot handle Dolby 5.1 in your situation.

Try your cable co's DVR. Mine delivers stunning Dolby.
