Thanks Jim. And you're right, but sometimes actual experience
goes a long way when it comes to explaining something to newbies.
OK then, what does "palmtop" and "pilot" mean?
I've had the zire21 for 8 mos and just bought a Tungsten.
There seems to be a difficulty in transferring the data from
one to the other. But I'll figure it out. Thanks again.

True, very true.

> OK then, what does "palmtop" and "pilot" mean?

palmtop is an abbreviation of palmtop computer, or a computer that fits
in the palm of your hand.

IIRC the original Palm was called 'Palm Pilot'. The Pilot Pen company
sued Palm for trademark infringement. Palm dropped 'Pilot' from it name,
but it was too late, every handheld computer is referred to as 'Palm
Pilot' no matter who makes it, like people calling a photo-copy a Xerox
copy.

It is this simple;
Install the new desktop software for the Tungsten X.
Hotsync the Tungsten X, when it asks, choose your old Hotsync name.

This works for all of my upgrades, because I don't screw around with the
new unit or the Hotsync software, just install, Hotsync, done.

Don't beam nothing, copy from the card, install to RAM, set conduits to
desktop overwrites handheld, just install, Hotsync.

If you have trouble, because you loaded something or entered data on the
new Tungsten X, do a "Hard Reset" to erase everything.

Actually, the original two models were the "Pilot 1000" and the
"Pilot 5000". It was after the suit that "Palm" was added.
Supposedly there was some sort of agreement where they could
make the transition "Pilot" -> "Palm Pilot" -> "Palm" so that
they wouldn't have to totally change the product name instantly
and thus lose brand recognition. The second-generation products
(the PalmPilot Personal and the PalmPilot Professional) both
had the dual name, and the next generations (Palm III and on)
finally dropped "Pilot" from the name.

Also the original product was introduced by 3-Com, not Palm. Somewhere along
the line I think 3-Com spun off Palm as a separate company.

Actually before that it was a US Robotics product. I bought a US Robotics
Palm Pilot. Then it sold it to 3COM and came the Pilot 1000, Pilot 5000,
Pilot Professional.
