NEW YORK, Feb 23 (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. (TIVO.O: Quote, Profile, Research)  
shares jumped more than 17 percent on Wednesday, fueled by speculation that  
Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) might make a try to  
buy the digital video recorder maker, analysts said.
"What we hear on the street is that Apple is interested in their business  
and that they are a takeout target," said analyst Steven Kroll Jr. of  
Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co.
 
Representatives for Apple and TiVo both declined comment.
 
TiVo's chief executive, Michael Ramsay, has said the company is not for  
sale. But with a market capitalization of only $300 million, analysts figure  
the company might be an easy target, perhaps from consumer electronics  
makers to media companies looking to bolster their video services.
 
Several companies have been discussed as potential suitors for TiVo,  
including Time Warner Inc. (TWX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Comcast  
Corp.(CMCSA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , Sony Corp.(6758.T: Quote,  
Profile, Research) and Liberty Media(L.N: Quote, Profile, Research) .
 
Analysts said that Apple's focus on its immensely successful iPod digital  
music player would probably preclude it from going after money-losing TiVo,  
whose growth strategy has been questioned due to the rise of cheaper DVRs  
being deployed by cable TV providers.
 
The shares jumped to $4.22, up 53 cents, in afternoon trade after earlier  
hitting a session high of $4.45. Volume was 10.7 million, more than double  
its daily average.

If it happens, I think it would be great.
 
Apple excels at solutions for video and sound. I suspect they would be
more interested in the Tivo service paradigm with .Mac and maybe
intergrate it into their Mac mini platform, along with iTunes, iMovie
and iDVD to provide a central wireless home media center.
 
There are also plenty of rumors of Apple and Sony getting very cozy,
also with the home media center in mind as a huge market in the coming
years, so it makes some sense.

It's absolutely *hysterical* that the same writers who had Apple on its
deathbed in the 1990s are now positioning a reborn and prosperous Apple
as the saviour of TiVo, supposedly on its deathbed in the ought-oughts.
 
That said, if Jobs could make a company-saving deal with Microsoft
years ago, he can do the same thing now with Comcast or whoever he
needs to do it with.

I still would want to see Echostar buy Tivo.  The software on Dish
Network boxes are so bad, they could really use the help and having the

You know, I went to directv just to try it out . . And the box software
just blows away dish boxes . . BUT -- if tivo did go the way of the
dish, I'd happily switch back!

Hell!!!!! Apple excells at making things proprietary and making them cost 3x  
as much!
Someone needs to tell Jobs that the all in one computer design died in the  
80's along with the ST and AMIGA systems

The only reason Microsoft helped Apple out was to take some of the heat off of  
microsoft as a monopoly.

Given that DirecTv is going to be making their own DVR eventually
there isn't any reason for Echostar to not use the Tivo software. I
know that DirecTV will keep supporting the Directivo units, but I
doubt if they will be supporting new ones  in the future.
 
If Apple were to buy Tivo I suspect they would have better luck
forging a deal with one of the big cable companies. That's what Tivo
really needs to become profitable.

One never knows.
 
The SD DVR that for which NDS is the "prime contractor" is being built by
Humax, who also build TiVos.  There is still no official announcement from
DirecTV or NDS regarding the software that these units will run.  I suspect
it won't be TiVo, but that's just my guess.

You know, I'm not typically an Apple fan, but Tivo and Apple do fit  
well.  They both excel in Interface and product design.  In general I  
think Apple would be good for Tivo as long as they don't suddenly start  
limiting software releases to the Mac (and yes, I feel that Mac owners  
are being shafted right now since TTG is PC only).  In fact Apple's  
clout could get them in places they can't seem to get right now.
 
Integrating the Interface and paradigm onto Mac-mini type hardware makes  
sense as well.  I have generally disliked Mac PC's because they are so  
proprietary, but with CE devices that's a moot point.  There a reason  
that iPod's are head and shoulder's above the competition, and it has a  
lot in common with the advantages Tivo has over other DVRs.

I keep hearing, this, but having used iPods in the store, they don't
seem to be anything special compared to my RCA Lyra (other than the support
for AAC, which I don't really care about).
 
I don't build playlists on the device itself (I use J. River Media Center
on the PC and export them to the Lyra), so if that's a lot better, I'd never
notice it.  They are physically smaller than my RCA, but I also paid a
heck of a lot less per GB ($270 for 40GB when the 40GB iPod was $499), and
can replace the hard drive if I want to for even more space.
 
The iPod does have a lot more accessories specific to it available, but
that's not surprising, seeing as how that's where the money is right now.
