Need to record specific local news programs M-F and S-S, same time,
every day. Only use for the system. Will any ReplayTV rigs permit
recording without a subscription?

Essentially, the old units (2xxx, 3xxx, Showstopper) came with
lifetime subscription. It is needed, but is always there.

I wouldn't think so. If it does happen, I bet they'll put something out
that allows the replay to become sub-free.

You haven't really seen many bankruptsys up close have you. Ask an
Evinrude owner how his extended warranty went.

The reality is all of those hacks the true believers are holding close
to their vest to keep RTV somewhat viable would end up on usenet
binaries groups.

DNNA is not going bankrupt but they could quite easily sell off their
RTV subscriber base to Zap2it if we were lucky, or to someone else who
would go bankrupt for them. Bear in mind the "lifers" have ZERO market
value. That is an unfunded obligation. The only revenue stream is from
"monthlies"

Any value a lifer has is as a customer to a future product and that
might not be backward compatible with RTV. It would actually help DNNA
to kill all of these old machines, in the same way IBM used to take
back old computers and crush trhem. You don't want to compete with
last year's product.

"Update" every replay with a "lifetime" subscription.

In the past their behavior suggests this MIGHT, and I stress MIGHT,
happen. No guarantee... but they can do it

Or... If you wish for a mere 300 more than the sticker price you can buy
a lifetime today, well tomorrow

You know... I saw that happen to a luckless passenger in a car once
(The driver was unhurt), Tree limb came through the roof and nailed the
passenger)

N/B M-10 Service drive near Abbot, city of Detroit, perhaps 10-15 years
ago I was on what would have been the s/b service drive, if there had
been one there (1200 Fr. Kern, an office building directly across the
freeway)

Who is "they". This company has changed ownership 3 times.

With the cable and satellite companies giving DVRs away for free it is
a decllining market unless they can get a "content" deal.

"They" are a content PROVIDER. DNNA signed an agreement with Tribune
Media some time ago to distribute services and functions to customers
using the Replay Server system.

And from various discussions, I believe the more "free" DVRs out there,
the more people think "free" is too expensive.

I have a lifetime subscription, since I bought mine as a refurb. My
concern is that they will stop providing content, and that I will not even
be able to record manually. I suppose if that happens, I'll just have to
be happy with the two years (or whatever it turns out to be) of use I've
gotten out of it so far, and try to find something else.

Not that I've heard any rumors lately, but considering I never see any ads
for Replay any more, and I keep hearing so frequently that Tivo (the one
that's supposed to be successful) is having so much trouble, it just makes
me worry.

Replay does not provide the content now as I understand it, They have
outsourced. And if I'm wrong, then they could easily outsource should
they stop.

I use zap2it when I'm out and about and want a TV guide, Like last week
Worked great www.usps.com to get the zip code where I was (had to
make up an address is all) and www.zap2it.com to get the listings
