I'm having a problem with an unmodified 4508 model. The power light started
blinking (the unit started re-booting on its own) and I can't get it to stop
(or finish booting). I tried unplugging & soft booting. I really need to
save the shows on the hard drive. Any suggestions?

I very strongly suspect the hard drive MIGHT be the problem.

That said, some older Replays had a hardware component which serves no
useful purpose, but does cause problems SIMULAR (I'm not sure if it's
exactly) like yours... I also don't know which models it is, I know my
5xxx units do not have this module.

Well if you REALLY need the shows, you can remove the hard drive and
plug it into your PC (either internal or via a USB case) then use the
rtvextract utility.

Or, pull the drive as above and use the disk image utility rtvpatch to
clone your old disk to a new one (maybe even increase the size). you can
optionally have it move your existing shows (it will take awhile though.

Another option, it to try and get it to boot and stay up, then use DVA
to pull the shows across the ethernet.

When my 45xx unit was endlessly rebooting I was able to stabilize it by
hitting the bypass switch when it booted. Turned out a bad spot on the
drive and when the live buffer tried to write to it the unit would die.

maalox, can you describe in more detail the RTV boot process?
Do you get the please wait screen?
Are you connected via RF or RCA cabling? Does anything comeout of the
TV? Most importantly, does it begin to buffer, flash and freeze and
then reboot?

Hey Steph & John & all replayers,
Sorry about the delay in response from the previous post.
Anyway, the touble w/my non-modified 4508 started one afternoon when the
unit was in the off mode (ac was plugged in obviously but I didn't have it
connected to a phone line or networked at that moment). It shows the Please
Wait screen. The unit doesn't soft boot & when I unplug it to hard boot,
still the same Please Wait screen.
I also have audio/video sync problems w/this unit. If I record anything over
an hour in duration, the audio is slightly behind the video after the first
hour of playback.
Now, I can easily change drives but I really need a couple of shows off the
existing drive. I've never used rtv extract.
What worried me most is the audio/video sync problem. I don't know if that
is a hard drive issue or if it's a motherboard issue. If the audio/video
sync problem is not correctable w/a new hard drive, I'd rather just send the
unit back to replay for a 5500 series. I have a couple of 5000 series units
so I'll still be able to network w/others.

Any/all suggestions are appreciated.

Changing the drive should fix it, but may now.

I have one Replay that has the A/V sync problem on some recordings,
regardless of the drive used.

BTW, at least I have had that unit long enough for it to have been
worthwhile to have lifetime activation.
