I was tickled pink to be able to download a newsclip of my Mom to my PC
with DVArchive. I noticed it created an MPEG of the show, but was
disappointed to see that both Realplayer and Windows Media Player
errored out immediately when trying to play it. Happily, however, it
plays fine in VLC Media player. The bad news is that, if I can't get
it to play on one of the Borg products, the chances of my siblings ever
viewing this mpeg are slim to none. As you may have already figured by
now, I'm an idiot when it comes to video technology - any suggestions
on how I might make this file more universally playable?

Yes, if you have NERO or ROXIO on board burn it to a Video CD, then they
can play it like a DVD on most modern DVD players

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. How about if I wanted to stream the
video from a web site, or edit it with something like Windows Movie
Maker or iMovie? In the former, it seems to import but with audio only
(haven't tried iMovie yet.)

I do my editing with Womble's MPEG-VCR program (the basic one) Never
figured out how to edit with the other video editors I have on board,
(Mostly NERO's vision express' package) figured out Womble's in only 2
tries after reading stuff here on the board, Works great and makes any
kind of MPG you wish when you are done.

There's a program called AVS Video Converter
(http://www.avsmedia.com/VideoConverter/index.aspx) that will convert
pretty much any video format into pretty much any other format. I've used
it for taking a DVD and converting to MP4 (Quicktime mov), WMV, Real, and
VCD/SVCD. Works great, and was able to open and convert some things that
Nero choked on.

It's not free, but it's only $29.95, and will also do some effects and
filters. You can bundle it w/ their Video Editor and/or their Audio Tools
for not much more. I haven't used the audio stuff, but I have used the
editor a little bit. I would agree that Womble is an easier to use video
editor (not the newer, cartoon interface one, but the MPEG2VCR one).

I think you do not need try more softwares which use system video
codecs.
VLC can play your video is for it use itself video decoder.

You can try total video converter which includes internal video codec
engine.
