I was just thinking of switching to a VoIP phone service (SunRocket, FWIW)
when it occurred to me to wonder if that would cause problems with my Replay
(an older ShowStopper model). Is there any way to download updates via VoIP?
Is Ethernet an option? (I haven't looked at the back of the thing in a long
while...)

Before hooking up to my lan, I tried to do a Replay dial-up over my VOIP
from BroadVox. Didn't work. As to WHY, I'm not sure if it was that the VOIP
service is no good for modem data, or that the format of the dialed number
was incorrect (i.e. should've dialed 1, but didn't, etc.). Don't know if the
older Replays will do LAN or not. Sorry.

The older Replays don't have ethernet, and it would be difficult to
add one. I've heard about a sutup that uses a modem on a computer to
accomplish that (the computer would have to be on), but that's not a
simple setup.

I found out the hard way with my 3030 model when I went to Vonage... I tried
every setting trick anyone mentioned on the Vonage forums, but I couldn't
get it to work more than once in 200 tries over two weeks.... I finally
caved and bought a 5580 and gave the 3030 to my parents...

The un-offiicial response was "hey, you're paying for a Voice-quality
connection and your ear isn't as picky about lost bits as your modem is..."

In the end, having the 5580 is a blessing in disguies... with DVArchive,
I've turned an old PC and a 120-gig drive into a video server to hold all of
my daughter's favorite movies. I record the movie to the 5580 from an
attached DVD player, then download it to the PC and delete it from the
ReplayTV. DVA makes the 5580 think the PC is another ReplayTv, so I can
then stream the movies back to the 5580 while preserving space for regular
recording...

So far, I've got 10 Disney movies on the video server... makes it easy to
accmodate my 3-yr old's movie requests--just select and play

As Mark said in his response, yes, but they are a pain (it requires setting
up a linux box that has a modem which you run to your RTV, then you have a
job on there that picks up to see if your RTV is trying to call out, when it
does, it "answers" and makes the RTV think it connected to an ISP and then
routes the requests via broadband connection).

You may want to check to see if SunRocket, or SunRocket customers found a
solution (some claimed paying for a Fax line from Vonage helped--but others
said it didn't make a difference).

The older machines didn't include Ethernet (I guess this was what it was
like when people with phones that had 4-prong connectors came home with an
answering machine with an RJ-11 modular plug [I actually remember that
happening to my grand parents]... well, I guess not, they could at least go
to the Shack and get a modular base and tap into the existing wiring...).

Did they let you transfer activation from the 3030 to the 5080? I'd be
really inteerested to know if anyone's gotten that to work (and how
they did it).

That is, they don't care about quality beyond voice quality.

I'm currently transferring a large (7.5GB) file from my Replay, for
the purpose of transferring from tape to DVD. And, yes, I know this
requires NTFS.

And it's even worse when your phone is HARDWIRED as most older ones
were around here. I never saw a 4-prong jack in a house (although I
saw plenty of adapters in the Radio Shack catalog). I did see some
wall plates with a single hole (like a 1/4-inch headphone jack) in it,
but there was no jack there, just wiring. The house we had built in
Denton TX in 1969 was like that, they (the builder) said it was so we
COULD have jacks.

No--I decided to go monthly for now on th 5580, but get the discounted $6.95
because the 3030 is still connecting and is under my name...

Great minds think alike--we're gathering all of our home movies currently on
VHS-C to do the same thing

My parent's house was that way--the black AT&T rotory wall-phone,
hardwired... He finally got rid of that phone in 1984! (It took another 5
years for him to decide to pay the $1 touch-tone fee... ahh... push-button
"pulse" dialing... what a pain in the $#@!)

I have SunRocket and have it hooked up through my Tivo. I have a newer
system and it works great. I'm not sure how it would work with an
older replay system. I'll ask around and see if I can find anything
out. Good luck.
