My upgraded (about 18 months ago and working fine until recently) PSS
recently started to freeze live or recorded video frequently, stop
recording due to a lack of drive space (not the actual case, there is
plenty of space) and make clicking noises. Eventually, it will
completely lock up and the only way to power off is to unplug it.
Unplugging to reset works for about 10 or 15 minutes and then the
problems start again.

I suspect this is a hard drive problem but would appreciate any
feedback.

what Replay unit? what kind of HD did you install?

What RPM is the 60Gig? Is it louder than it should be?

My 120Gb 5400RPM Maxtor, started to make a constant squealing sound after
almost two years. Good thing it had a three year warranty, that Maxtor
promptly replaced. The reason I asked what RPM your HD was is that the
7200RPM drives run a lot hotter than the 5400, in the 3000s, that have no
cooling fans. Plus the drive is right next to the power supply, bad design.

It sounds like your HD is slowly getting bad sectors, until there are no
good sectors left. Time to replace it. You can still find 120Gb 5400 RPM
drive out there for about $69, get them while you still can. You can
probably find an 80Gb for about the same price. They are starting to make
120GB 2.5" 4500 RPM drives, but they cost almost $200. IMHO, these would
make great drives if money were no object.

If you want to keep your SS3000 running, if you decide to replace the drive.
Make sure it has plenty of air space around the vents, and install a HD
cooler.

One can generally add fans... One may have to do some metal work and/or
shop around for fans but they come in assorted sizes starting with abot
one inch squares and going up to big enough to move things around in
your living room (heck, big enough to move your living room) however you
don't need a fan quite that large (you don't think fans come that
large... Look at a swamp boat or a propeller driven airplane or a
capter,,, That is ONE BIG many Horsepower FAN!)

I'm not sure what you're rambling about, but the same thing happened to me.
My Maxtor started making a high pitched sound about a couple years after I
upgraded. I went out and got another 120GB 5400 rpm from Fry's Electronics,
Copied my drive to the new one and sent it back for warranty. When I got my
drive back from Maxtor, I installed it in my computer as a storage drive.
Next time I have to replace the drive, I'm going to relocate it to the dual
drive location and use a HD cooler, I saw at Fry's for $8. I like the 2.5"
drive idea. Maybe by the time my current 120GB dies, those 2.5" drives
might be a little cheaper.

BTW, what's the largest single drive you can put into a 55xx?

I was just saying fans come in many sizes and I'm sure he can find one

mine used to do this too.. the drive is going bad. probably i would
recommend a re-format and check for bad sectors....
probably best is to replace the drive
