I can go to the public library and log on without a hitch, but at a coffee house or cafe I can not connect. Sometimes it says 'cannot validate..' and sometimes it just says 'unable to connect to wireless network' What gives? :bounce:

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

The secured networks require a security key which you get from asking the owner of the network, and sometimes paying a fee. On connecting some of them divert your browser to their own page at which they tell you how to log in.

Even after entering the key it will not connect.

Some older models of laptop have wireless adapters which cannot recognise or connect to, the security level of WPA2. Can you find a WEP or WPA to experiment on to show that is the problem? If it is, you'd need to buy a USB powered wireless dongle.
