I won't include the ebay user's ID here (he does post to this group from
time to time). I've received a couple LDs from him that he listed as
'SEALED' which I, and probably others would, assumed that meant they were
new old stock.

What I found is that these 'sealed' discs were rentals repackaged in
shrink wrap. It was not mentioned in these auctions that they were used
or rental discs .. just that they were 'sealed'.

Please be careful when you come across auctions that just state the discs
are 'sealed'

Ex-rental discs that are resealed with shrinkwrap should be opened up
and simply sold as ex-rental stock.
I buy large collections, some of which have still sealed items that
were never opened by the original owner.
In fact, last night I listed a huge pile of discs on ebay. About 30 are
new and still factory-sealed.
About 3 years ago, I bought a boat load of discs from a guy who used
to have a video store.
The bastard wrapped up his ex-rentals with shrink wrap.
I had a Hell of a time differentiating between Real factory-sealed
stock and used stuff that he re-sealed himself.
Got to the point where I was opening real sealed movies just to test
them...
Usually, ex-rental movies will have a store sticker or price sticker
on the cardboard jacket itself, UNDER the shrink-wrap- which is a give
away.
Personally, I would NEVER KNOWINGLY sell re-shrinkwrapped discs as
"sealed."
I think you should identify the seller as if you don't, all of the
sellers who post here from time to time will be tarred and feathered
with the same brush!

"sealed" is a red flag. It usually means that the seller
(on eBay or elsewhere) owns a shrinkwrap machine. The
lack of additional information about disc condition tells
you that there's a reason the seller omitted it.

"factory sealed", even when it's not a lie, is not very
reassuring either, due to potential laser rot and warp
from over-tight wrap.

If I were buying LDs online, I'd much prefer a statement
that the discs have been sampled, with some statements
of video signal quality, media surface condition, and are
shipped in re-sealable polypropylene outer sleeves (and
poly-lined paper inner sleeves [or DiscWasher VRPs],
and not the flimsy collapsing U-bags).

I sell a lot of laserdiscs on eBay and all the used titles are CLEARLY
marked as "Previously Viewed", which is the term used for titles that are
not new. They can be either former rentals or privately owned. New titles
I say are "Factory Sealed". I never just say "sealed".

I do shrinkwrap my titles for shipping because it better protects them and I
ship in a special laserdisc size box. I have sold thousands this way and
have not had one single complaint as my feedback (2876 and 100 percent)
indicate.

Apparently my attempt at humor did not work. Did not mean to offend.

I have noticed over the years that a lot of buyers don't fully read eBay
listings. I am constantly getting questions for which the answer is stated
in the listing and that doesn't count the number of people that say that
they didn't know a laserdisc was not the same as a DVD.

I will be listing a new (previously viewed) bunch starting tonight and that
doesn't count the almost 1000 titles in my eBay store.

I KNEW this stuff would happen. The original poster should have
contacted the seller directly to make a complaint.
If his complaint was not dealt with in an honest and conscientious
manner, then he should contact ebay to make a complaint.
Just posting a vague complaint here in the ng. raises all kinds of
suspicions.
Personally, had I inadvertently sold an ex-rental as New and Factory
Sealed, I'd make some type of restitution agreeable to the buyer.
To simply shrinkwrap ex-rentals knowingly, then toss them on ebay
saying they are "sealed" hoping that the buyers would be tricked into
thinking that they were mint, factory-sealed items, is fraudulent. Such
sellers should be tossed off ebay.
IF it's an honest mistake on the seller's part, then the buyer should
contact him for some type of reimbursement.

I always differentiate Rentals from regular used discs from a private
collection.
I'll say Store label, or Store sticker on the jacket. I don't remove
them, as they often leave either a sticky residue which is a pain, or
there's a chance the cover will be torn.
Ex-rentals are often dealt with more harshly than normal used discs
from a private collection.
As a rule, a collector won't abuse his discs and might watch them only
several times. Often, ex-rentals will have plenty of surface scratches
from being rented many times by careless people.
This isn't always the case, but in my experience, used ex-rentals are
lower on the totem pole then privately used discs purchased new by the
collector himself.

I bought a collection of 61 discs and a player off a seller who listed
everything as "like new" and "plays perfect". I should have probed a bit
deeper, but since I've purchase > 200 discs off ebay, many from posters
here, without significant incident, I thought nothing of it.

The box arrives and over 20 of the discs are in those bizarre clamshell
cases that some rental places and most public libraries used. The jackets
for all of these were slit open in order to fit under the clear plastic
outer liner of the clamshell. Now when I go to sell them, I have to
disclaim all of the above and put up with the loss because someone else was
either too stupid or too dishonest (in this case it was the former) to
properly disclose the source of the discs, and I was too stupid to ask.

Lesson learned.
