Hello,

Someone know if the cld-r6g has better quality output than the cld-r5 ?
I just know that the r6g has the LD-G feature, but i didn't found
anything other about it.

The R5 and R6G share the same comb filter, a Sony. The 6's MSRP was
almost half more than that of the 5, suggesting a much better machine
overall. In particular the 6 can freeze or slow-mo a CLV disc which the
5 cannot. The 6's production stopped around 1998 while the 5 is still
in production, so if offered an old 6 or a recent/new 5 the choice gets
difficult, otherwise the 6 is definitely better to own than the 5.

While using composite output (with external Comb filter), is a R7G
really better than a R5/R6G ?

Composite video output on most decks is recombined from S video
(exceptions i know of are HLD-X0 and HIL-C2). Does this mean the
quality of the comb filter would therefore also affect the quality of
the composite video ? I am not sure but it would seem so.

The CLD-R7G has an excellent NEC comb filter, which it shares with the
little known high-end DVL-H9.

Quality of the comb filter effects some units. Some come out of the digital
TBC/Memory with Y/C signals and then they are combined to form the
composite. By theory these should have better S-Video unless your monitor
has a filter that performs extra work with the Composite signal making it
preferred. Other models have the Y/C and Composite coming out of the
TBC/Memory separately and here the composite is usually preferred (with the
exception of the few 3D Adaptive filters for Y/C. All of the units I've
seen with the high end filter have separate paths for the composite verses
Y/C so the filter has ZERO effect on the composite output.

Yes the R6G has the Quick Turn feature, in fact all recent Pioneer
decks have it except the X9.

Back to the interesting subject of composite re-composition, the HLD-X0
and HIL-C2EX specifically mention that one of their composite outputs
(the one with a BNC plug) is a "direct out" composite with a different
path than the other composite output (with a regular pin plug). The
manuals explain that nothing but TBC is applied to this "direct"
output. In particular, the Sony manual says that screen info will not
be shown through the direct output. I thought it meant the regular
composite output was a recombination, while the direct would not be. As
other decks do not mention this, i also thought it meant the other
decks only had "regular" (recombining) outputs. Can someone
explain/confirm in opposition to what these outputs are "direct", what
else than TBC is applied to the composite "normal" outputs, and if
outputs on some hi-end models (X9 etc...) could be "direct" even though
the manual doesn't mention it ? The X0 even had a flow-chart explaining
this feature, maybe someone could post a scan of it ?
