I have quite a few games that I like to play, and I thought that getting
another computer would make things run easier. Boy was I wrong. Ever since
I got this computer, which by the way came with Windows XP, none of the games
ever work right. They either won't load at all, or they cut out with these
Engine Executable Errors all the time. Someone mentioned that there was a
way to force XP to run in a different Windows format, but they didn't know
how to do it. I'm so fed up with this already. I've gotten to the point
where I'm going to buy a different Windows format just so I don't have to
deal with this anymore. Help! Is there a way to do this, or something you
can suggest to stop this from happening?

So, I just found out how to make it run in a different mode, and that still
didn't work. Even after uninstalled/reinstalled the game. I also went into
the Setup.exe and changed it to run compatibly with a different mode, and it
still didn't work. I'm at my wits end here...

There is something amiss on your system, the GeForce 6800 certainly
has enough video memory, run dxdiag.exe and paste the result here
please. Did you check for patches for the games and did you try to
install and run them in compatibility mode?

Hi Katy-

I've taken screen shots of everything that came up after I ran DXDIAG. It
really didn't report any errors. The only thing that errored was on a
different game that I didn't install the DirectPlay option. Please send me
an email, and I'll send you the file with all the screen shots to you. I
can't past them in here, and I think things might go easier if you could see
exactly what I'm looking at too. liriel_nmf@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Nicole

I noticed I forgot to answer you about the compatability mode. Yes I tried
to run it in compatability mode. That didn't work, and I also have a screen
shot of what pops up when I get the error. So, then I uninstalled the
program, then ran the setup wizard in compatability mode, then tried to run
the program in compatability mode, and I got the same error.

Also, I always get patches for my games off Adrenaline Vault. The company
that makes the games that I'm having trouble with was 3DO and New World
Computing, both of which are out of business. I'm beginning to wonder if
it's something in the programming of the games. Maybe it doesn't understand
what a gigabyte is? I'm kinda grasping at straws here...

At the bottom on the dxdiag window there is a "save all info" button,
click on it then save the txt file and paste its content here, no need
to take screen shots ;-)

What are the games names?

OK, I'll do that tonight. The games are all Might and Magic's VI - VIII, and
Heroes of Might and Magic III. I haven't bought Might and Magic IX yet,
because I'm worried I'll spend the money and then surprise! it doesn't work
either you know? I'll paste in the text file tonight. Thanks again.

In the meantime I have found these threads about Might and Magic on
ntcompatible.com:
http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread29553-1.html
http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread28237-1.html

This one looks promising as well:
http://celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=383

As the games were not designed for XP and the publisher is out of
business, if you do not find a way to have them run under XP I'd
suggest going back to 9x for these - either with dual boot or on a
dedicated computer. I doubt that Windows 2000 will handle them any
better than XP...
