I have been looking at the Faroudja LD100 to add to my laserdisc set
up.

My question: can I run the BNC component outputs to a modern HDTV (a
Sony Grand Wega LCD projection for example) using the correct adapter?
I assume I would need something that would go from the BNC output on
the LD100 to the Component inputs found on the modern TV (I am also
assuming such a creature exists).

FYI the laserdisc is a Pioneer Elite CLD-79.

I had one of these for awhile and it does a better job than the ISCAN's at
line doubling. It outputs RGBHV and 15 pin D-Shell. The reason I sold mine
is that I had to input it into the 15 pin input in my HDTV. The HDTV did
not give me any formatting options so it stretched the picture out to 16X9
(Widescreen). The only HD set I know of that lets you switch display modes
using a 480p input is the 2004 Mitsubishi HD-RPTV's.

You need to know the LD100 was developed years ago and the Faroudja
equipment IS VERY GOOD, but this was designed before Widescreen sets were
available so it is not designed to output 16X9 Widescreen.

If the line-doubler will output in YPbPr format, a VGA-to-component
adaptor cable will work for those with only component video inputs. If
it only outputs in RGB format, that won't work.

Toshiba sets have always allowed full aspect ratio control. Other
manufacturers are finally starting to come around on this, but there are
still far too many that forcibly lock into 16:9 mode on any progressive
scan signals.

The iScan line has an advantage in this case, as they all offer the
option to pillarbox a 4:3 picture in the center of a 16:9 screen. The
higher end models (Ultra and above) will also zoom a non-anamorphic
letterbox picture.

I agree the latest ISCAN's give you the aspect controls and they are pretty
good but the LD100 was better. The ISCAN is probably the best lower cost
option but the Faroudja is better but you have to pay for it.

Faroudja and Silicon Image (the chip iScan uses) each have their own
strenghts and weaknesses. Silicon Image is slightly better with
film-based material, and Faroudja is slightly better with video-based
material.
