Some newer high end receivers (Pioneer, Denon) have on-board RF demodulators
for laserdisc players. Are there any ill side effects to putting the RF
demodulator on the receiver?

Get a Japanese A/V Amp model, most of them still have the RF Demodulator
included

My Pioneer VSA-D8EX was the first mid-range Dolby EX/DTS ES Amp (5x150W,
extra stereo amp required for EX/ES) and it must cost about $350 today.

In Japan as elsewhere, only the high-end models have built-in RF
demodulation now. In the domestic Pioneer line-up, only the AX-10
(MSRP $4600) and AX-5 (MSRP $1800) have an RF input. Pioneer is the
last bastion of LD technology so i suppose the situation is even worse
elsewhere. At this rate, most people will be better off with a cheaper
amp and an external demod.

In Japan as elsewhere, only the high-end models have built-in RF
demodulation now. In the domestic Pioneer line-up, only the AX-10
(MSRP $4600) and AX-5 (MSRP $1800) have an RF input. Pioneer is the
last bastion of LD technology so i suppose the situation is even worse
elsewhere. At this rate, most people will be better off with a cheaper
amp and an external demod.

That was my point.

Plenty of mid to high-range Pioneer models from 2000-2002 with RF
demodulator included, EX/ES, AAC, etc.

Mine used to cost $1800 MSRP and is now about $350. Not bad compared to a
sealed RFD-1 at $275

I never tried to check what was coming out of the "Coax Out" when using a
AC3-RF signal. Is it the decoded AC3 stream?

No, the AC-3 comes out in RF form, undecoded, thats why you need the RF
demodulator. The signal from the demodulator is then no different from a
modern dvd player's digital output.

It is unclear if you quote used, or new left-overs in infinitesimal
quantity that can only be found if searching hard and/or lucky. In
both cases, not really what the post was about, i think. For the
average consumer, present lineups do not include RF inputs, except on
the very high end. Yes, in that situation, they're better off buying a
slightly used amp from the previous generations (or digging for a new
one) as you seem to suggest, but keeping the RF demodulation as a
standalone is somewhat simpler and allows for future amp upgrades
without having to worry about the RF part.

I too own a mid-range amp from 2002 with RF input but... i need 2 or 3
RF inputs so i have external demods as well.

I seriously considered replacing my Denon with an Pioneer Elite unit last year
so that I'd have the built in RF Demodulator. However, I realized that I'm
going to want to upgrade my A/V reciever once every 3-4 years and when that
happens again, I'd lose the extra hardware. In the long run, IMO, buying an A/V
reciever with built in demodulation is only worthwhile if you aren't like me
and you plan on keeping the unit for many years to come. Otherwise, spending
$250 or so on a standalone is a better bet. Of course, this is assuming that
you own enough AC-3 encoded LDs to make a demodulator of any kind worthwhile.

In the US the flagship models from Pioneer and Dennon have RF domodulators.
I don't know about Meridian. The Pioneer THX select model may have it as
well.
