For a start, if you're not using the COM1 port, disable it. Same goes for the AC'97 Audio controller. You have a sound card there, so you don't need the Audio controller.

Manually reserve in BIOS or assign in Windows IRQ 5 for the sound card.

If you can, get the FastTrak controller onto the freed IRQ 4.

This will reduce the usage of IRQ 11.

By the way, if it all works fine, leave it alone.

Also, if you can get info either in your mobo manual, or on line, double check the IRQ usage and/or sharing of the PCI slots.

Thanks so much for replying Camieabz: >

Ok, i know how to disable the onboard sound in the bios, i'll do that(makes sense)

As for the com port 1, what would go there anyway?(not sure if i'm using it)

I'm running ME if that means anything.

Everything works fine, but sometimes when viewing DVD'S (ACTUALLY ALOT) it will freeze.

I have to wait several minute or more for it to start again.

Audio also skips sometimes when it's about to freeze. (not sure skip is the correct word)

THANKS AGAIN

com ports are those smaller looking ports next to your printer port. you typically use them for older or slower devices. (in other words, you probably dont use it)

as for DVD watching, are you watching actual DVDs off a dvd rom or are you watching DIVX, because DIVX can require a decent amount of CPU time and can possibly cause your video card or cpu to heat up and shut down. if thats not the case, its most likely a power management issue in windows.

Hard work often pays off in time, but laziness always pays off now.

More Information

The fact that you have onboard sound, and a sound card going together, plus the fact that you have a few things on IRQ11 may cause it. May not..hehe.

COMs 1 & 2 are 9 pin ports on the back of your base unit next to the parallel post (as Antipop says). Usually a serial mouse or external modem connects there.

One other suggestion that I have used with my system... if you're using the Promise controller exclusively, disable the onboard IDE. That will free up two IRQs that you really don't need anyway. The only reason I reenabled my primary onboard was to install XP... damn disc wouldn't boot from my SCSI drive. Prior to that, I'd been running with the onboard IDE disabled for months with no issues.

Thanks to all who replied ,THANKS SO MUCH: >

One question, why do they sell pc's with onboard IDE and also install a "Promise controller" at the same time? Is there any good reason for PC to have both working at the same time?

That's the way mine came, i always wonder about that .

Also, i'm viewing DVD'S with my DVD-ROM.

PS:I disabled the onboard sound and Com 1 port.Waiting for reply regarding ONBOARD IDE before i disable it.

Thanks again to all : >

More Information

The main reason my mobo has a Promise controller integrated was because it's based on the Via KT133 chipset, which has and integrated ATA/66 IDE controller. The Promise controller is ATA/100, so that's why I use it instead of the integrated Via controller. (My hard drive is ATA/100). Another reason to have two is so you can have boasting rights that your mobo can support up to eight IDE devices (hard drive, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, etc). Since the only IDE device in my system is my HD, I don't need the Via contoller for anything else. If you're fine using the Promise contoller and don't need more than 4 IDE devices, then stick with the Promise and disable the Via.
