I just tried the CaptureOne RAW conversion and was quite
impressed....except for one thing. It seems to be missing the
functionality of lens correction (i.e. chromatic abberation and
vignetting as provided in ACR). Is it really not there or did I miss
something?

Thanks

Really not there ... if your lenses are good you really don't need them
:)

That kind of stinks. I thought it did a great job on an ISO1600 night
shot. But the lack of lens correction :( Every lens shows up issues
under the 'right' conditions. They really should add that functionality.

You can log on to their user forums and post your suggestions as a
topic there. You can also enter it in the 'suggested features for
Version 4' thread ... several employees are active participants and
will probably explain why they haven't done this yet and whether or not
they intend to do it in the next rev.

I tried, but my login and password didn't work. I love it when
companies make it difficult to talk to them.
I will talk to them about it at the Photoplus Expo in October. I'm sure
like most companies they won't pay
any attention to what their potential customers have to say :(.

Looks like you could be a prime candidate for DXO Optics Pro - presuming
your lenses and camera body are supported by them. This rather clever RAW
conversion software automatically corrects optical distortions, chromatic
aberrations and vignetting (corner shading) through the profiling of sample
camera and lens combinations. In other words, the software will know what to
correct in advance and just do it. Version 3.0 was launched recently:

At least one reviewer felt that the RAW converter was awkward to use
and probably not worth the bother, though he liked the other correction
tools in DXO Optics Pro ... this guy is a beta tester with a close
relationship to the company so it's doubly interesting that he didn't
like the RAW converter module ...

It's certainly far from perfect, but I like the strategic approach. I also
think that DXO is going to make a lot of money offering its camera and lens
system profiling service to camera phone manufacturers. There are some very
clever guys there.

They are popping over from Paris to London to visit the UK press and I'm
booked in for a chat next week; I'll but some of Michael's concerns to
them - and ask why no Olympys lenses have been profiled yet!

Incidentally, like Michael, I use DXO Analyzer for camera testing.

I am only a prime candidate if it is $99 or less :)

I guess another option for me is to upgrade to Pshop CS2. If I still
prefer CaptureOne for RAW conversions, I can always do the chromatic
abberation, vignetting, and barrel/pincushion distortions after the
fact.

You have a point. But what was implied (in my mind :) ) is that
I will probably be upgrading to CS2 any so...

Have you tried DxO? (www.dxo.com)

Does RAW converting, allows for multiple file output (.jpg, .tif, and
whatever the new "digital negative" format is), and does lens correction
based on the model of camera and lens you are using. I do suggest
turning off the "Lighting Module" because it brings out detail in dark
areas that I expose to be dark on purpose. (If I wanted detail in those
shadows, I'd have exposed for the shadows!)
