I would like to make video call from a UMTS mobile phone in Europe to
friends in USA (CA). I guess where Cingular have UMTS network, this will
work but the 3G network is very small compare to what Verizon offers in
USA with CDMA2000. (It seems only San Diego is covered with UMTS by
Cingular).

What are the operators which offer video call on their 3G network ? Why
does Verizon seems to ignore this feature on their new 3G network ?
Cingular is the only one to offer that in California ?

3G is brand-new here. Verizon just started rolling out CDMA 1xEV-DO over the
past 18 months. Sprint isn't officially launching until December. Nextel is
merging with Sprint and migrating their customers to a CDMA-based platform
and won't be doing anything major for a while. Alltel, as far as I know,
hasn't launched 3G yet. And T-Mobile USA still only has GPRS, although they
are apparently rolling out EDGE in several markets. No official
announcements from them yet.

If Cingular is doing UMTS, that puts them ahead of everyone except Verizon
in the deployment of 3G wireless technology.

Don't forget, this is the US, and some of the high-end services available to
wireless users elswhere aren't yet available here.

John, the "awredirect" query string pops up an annoying "This ATTWS Page has
moved to Cingular.com" message.

gets you the same page without the popup.

True, but the ATTWS redirect is a reminder that the UMTS service was actually
deployed by ATTWS, not the old Cingular, which has yet to expand it.

Works anywhere on the planet without all this pissing around with multiple
companies/systems/modulation schemes/other nonsense.

Indeed. I'm getting the impression that he doesn't pay much attention to the
posts he answers, instead just posting a random selection from his stock of
