Hello, I have two geforce video cards and would like to use them together with SLI . Do they have to be absolutely identical? Thanks

Yes, same cores and same type.

What cards are they?

Thank you both for answering and excuse me for not being more exact: My most recent gpu is Geforce560gs; the old one, from about 2007 when it was released, is the geforce6800gs. The build, still a work in progress, has a Corsair750, 16GB of memory; an AMD fx(tm) 8120; on a Asus Sabertooth 990FX.

If you say I can't use them both I will take your word for it, of course. However, if you express some doubt and suggest trying it anyway, is there a possibility of hardware damage? I'm not a gamer--my thing is desktop publishing and photography.

Your help is very much appreciated; I would have responded sooner but I was in the Oregon woods the past week looking for snow. We got it as we were packing to go home.

This is a great site, in no small part because of guys like you. Thanks again,

LarryParis

First off they will not SLi, for that both cards have to have the same GPU, core count and it's advisable to match memory amount as well as not all cards of the same type can be SLi'd if the RAM amounts are different. You could use the two cards in the same machine if you just wanted an extra monitor though.

Thanks MouseMonkey, I was afraid your expected answer would be the definitive one. I'll just wait for the price to come down on my new card. Newegg, are you listening. :-)

No problem; I actually had planned to use the card on another build anyway.
