My brother acquired a computer from his friend. It isn't a very good one, but he says he will get a new graphics card and see where it goes. Before he buys his card, I want to ask.

Will PCIe 3.0 be backwards compatible to PCIe x16? I would really hate for him to get a PCIe 3.0 card and not be able to use it with his PCIe x16

PCI Express 3.0 Base specification revision 3.0 was made available in November 2010, after multiple delays. In August 2007, PCI-SIG announced that PCI Express 3.0 would carry a bit rate of 8 gigatransfers per second, and that it would be backwards compatible with existing PCIe implementations.

Maybe, maybe not. There have been a few reported issues of motherboards with PCI-e 1.0 and 1.1 slots not working with PCI-e 2.1 cards. Whether this issue may exist for PCI-e 3.0 cards is not clear yet.

Chances are it will work since it is supposed to be backwards compatible.
