Which CPU is better?

Forum Homebuilt Systems : New Build Which CPU is better?

a Intel Pentium E5700 Wolfdale 3.0GHz dual core. $60
a Intel Pentium G850 Sandy Bridge 2.9 GHz dual core. 87.99

If you can explain why which one is better I'd appreciate it. :)

P.S. which ever is better I'll purchase, I thought the E5700 was better because of more GHz that was always my logic o.O

The Sandy Bridge is waaay better. As a newer processor, the architecture is superior so there is more performance per clock cycle. It also has the advantage of less power consumption and a non-outdated platform.

The G850 would be quite a bit better. First of all, there is only 100Mhz difference, and that isnt much. The main reason the G850 is better, is because it is a newer design, and it's internal architecture is completely different. It would be like comparing 2 cars that both have a chevy 350 cubic inch V-8..but one is stock, the other is in a drag racer. Even though its the same engine block...inside they are way different. Make sure it is compatable though. If you are going to replace the cpu in a system you already have...well.. those 2 cpu's each require a different socket

G850 Sandy Bridge is better.

First off the integrated memory controller is a significant performance factor reducing latency between your CPU and RAM. Also, the Sandy bridge supports 1066 DDR3 RAM vs the E5700s 800 DDR2 RAM. Then you have the larger cache size, 3MB vs 2MB.

^ that's my MoBo
and I'm making a Newbuild, so it should be compatible. ;)

err i could be mistaken but isn't the e5700 a 775 while the g850 is 1155. if that's your motherboard only the g850 would be compatible. out of those two procesors i mean.

Yeah, the G850 is the processor I chose, thanks for confirming it though. :)
