Hi guys.

I've just about completed my first build but ran into a snag with wiring. I can't seem to figure out some simple things that i hope i can get help with over here.

I hooked everything up to the MB just fine but am questioning myself with connecting things with the PSU. So here goes.

1. My HDD and optical drive have both a 6bs/s sata port and a sata power port. Do i need use both of those ports for the devices to work? The smaller Sata3 port will not power the device?

2. Can i mix different type of devices and plugs going into the PSU? ex) if my HD and optical drive both need to have the sata power cable connected, then i assume i can run them both from the same cable (with multiple sata connectors) to the PSU, BUT that cable also has two molex connectors which i can use for a molex ending wire coming from the front panel(power button or top-mounted external hd bay?). So can i have that molex power connector running back to the psu with both of those unrelates sata connectors or should i use a cable that has only sata for the sata devices and molex for molex?

3. should all the fans in my case (5) be connected to one cable going to the psu or can you split them up? at least one of them has a plug that seems to go right into the MB, so i figure its supposed to go there?

there are two plugs: one for the data (the sata cable) and the power plug that goes to the psu to power the device. You need both

You can use all the plugs on any given cable or only those you want

any way to want to. they can run off different cables if that works best for you.

If you have a problem with an Ebay seller you may or may not get good support. For ciritical items I suggest you stick with a know and proven business

1: The longer L shaped plug on the hard drive/optical drive is for the power connection for the drive. The smaller one is from what it physically transfers data by. You will need both. The drive doesn't receive and power from the data connection so the power one is needed as well. SATA 6 Gbps (SATA 3) is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gbps (SATA 2) in case you run out of SATA 3 connectors. Not entirely relevant to powering them, but I thought I would mention it to clear up the distinction.

2: Short answer, yes, you can mix and match with the cables.

3: You can chain a few fans one power cable, but I've noticed when I've done the same the fans down the end of the cable seem to not run, probably since it's starved of power. Try and space them off of a few different cables. If a fan is plugged into the board, it receives power and is also able to be monitored and regulated by the computer (display rotational speed, increase speed when detecting system heat increase, etc).

I can't comment on making a purchase off ebay since I've never made one myself, but if you buy from Newegg, you're getting a brand new one as well as warranty support if anything goes wrong.

thank you both for your answers. Glad i don't have to involve more wires than i already have. Now if only the i7 2600k went back to its early January price.... i would have my final component
