I'm currently planning out a gaming computer and I'm having trouble finding information about what kind of cooler I should get with an AMD 960T cpu. I was originally planning on the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO- a good cooler for a good price. However, I found out that AMD CPU's can run pretty hot especially when overclocked, so I was curious if this cooler will still do the job.

Here are my computer's specs so far, in the case that any of this info would be relevant:

CPU: AMD 960T
GPU: XFX 6850
Mobo: (not yet decided for sure) ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+
HDD: Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb
PSU: OCZ ZS Series 750W
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb (4gbx2)
Case: NZXT Gamma

Unless you are doing some insane overclocking, the EVO will definitely suffice for your needs.

The 212 evo is even good enough for you to unlock the other 2 cores.

get the 212+ since its cheaper for the same performance. The cooler has no problem cooling much more power hungry cpus so its no problem with the 960t.

If I can make a recommendation about the gpu, its probably better to get the 6870 since its price is so close to the 6850 and you'd get a decent bit more performance. :)

Also you psu is a bit overkill, for a 6850 or 6870 a quality 500w psu is more than enough.

Wow thank you so much, I was originally going to get a 650w but my friend said for sure I'd need a 750w at least, now I can get a better PSU with a lower wattage.

Anyways, I've already purchased my GPU, HDD, and Case. I think I'll stick with the Hyper 212 then. I'll look at more benchmarks before I pick the Plus or EVO though. I plan on OCing in the future and unlocking the 2 extra cores.

the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is big. you should make sure it fits into your mid tower case first.

It looks like you've already got your answer... but, I just installed the 212 plus on a 960T, and it took my temps from ~50 C at full load, down to ~23 C at full load. It is large though, but plenty of room in my case.
Great deal for $24!

Forgot to add - those temps are also with the 960T OC'd to 3.45....

I just installed the Asus m5a88-v evo along with the 960t, last week. This board works great with that cpu. Mine unlocked with no problem. Remember, not all of these will unlock the extra 2 cores. This mobo is great. It has many easy ways to beef up the performance, as well as keep it cool. It comes with alot of tweeking software and to unlock the cores, you simply find the little switch on the board and turn it on.

There's a small red led that lights when it's on. I also put in 8 gigs of G.Skill 1600, and Antec Truepower 750 PSU. Very quiet operation and very fast. I have the stock cooler running and the idle temp is 40C. When gaming it jumps to 48C. This all well with danger zone of 62C for this cpu. With the extra 2 cores unlocked it raises the temp by about 3 degrees.

But, there is no way to know for sure, as the temp readings are not accurate with the cores unlocked. So, to be safe, until I get a good cooler in there, I'll run just the 4 cores, which is plenty fast. Also, the graphics card with this mobo is doing good. I'm playing FEAR 3 with the settings at mid level in the game. This card will do until I get a good one. I want Nvidea. The Hybrid Crossfire X, is no good. You can only use low end cards with it. Much better to go with one good one. Anyway, this board is working great so far, and the cpu is fast, and I have no complaints at all.
