Hi there looking at getting a 16bit pcmcia wireless lan card for an older
computer

The only one I know of that is currently available is the Netgear MA401

Just wondering are there are other cards/brands available? or is the Netgear
card about the only one available for older laptops at the moment?

Linksys? We've had two of these cards around the house for a couple of
years, no problems. I wouldn't get a B card. May be fine for the Net, but if
you share files across a home network you need G. For instance, I capture
video files, on my laptop, which could be a couple of gigs in size. I can
push it onto my desktop in under 10 minutes. (Don't quote me.)

I don't know what you consider an "older laptop"; I use my G card in a
five-year-old Compaq. I think as long as you have a PCMCIA or PCard port,
you're in the game.

sorry but the card you mentioned is 32bit cardbus slot compatible only.

PCMCIA slots 2 Type I or 2 Type II or 1 Type III / Zoomed Video
support in lower slot /
PCMCIA 2.1 compatible / PC Card Standard 95 / Cirrus Logic CL-PD6729
(PCI)


The slots in my loptop are neither 32bit nor cardbus compatible. Therefore I
think only the netgear is my only choice. As its specifications work on
pcmcia type II slots and 95b/98 and higher.

I'd be surprised if it's still made. I bought one over a year ago
in the US (from Fry's) who were selling off their old stock for
something like $5 each.

Your best bet is probably to search the secondhand market if you
need a 16bit (pre-cardbus) PCMCIA card. There, you might find any
of the pre-cardbus PCMCIA wifi cards.

Xircom CWE100

Got mine off eBay for £4 ($7 US?) though have now upgraded.

Some 32bit also do 16bit.

Tons of 16bit ones on ebay. Just look for the used ones without the
gold coloured strip on the leading edge.

let me guess, that older computer is an amiga right ?

there is a compatibility list page for amiga computers (amiga 1200 and amiga 600 which have 16bit pcmcia ports) here . The only Wireless entry happens to be the netgear, with the prism chipset.
