I'm planning on buying a Laptop and I'm facing a very difficult
choice: Should I go with AMD's Turion 64 or Pentium M ?

I really like the idea of having a 64bit system so I will be able to
upgrade in the future (my laptop has to last at least 3 to 4 years), on
the other hand I hear that the Turion64 drains much more juice from the
battery than the Pentium M. I'm trying to find out if it is possible
to find a balance between in having the 64bit upgradeability of the
Turion64 and a good battery run time.

I am looking at the Compaq v2000z (Turion64) and the Compaq v2000
(Pentium M). Does anybody have any battery run time data/comparison
from these machines? Would I be losing a lot of battery time if I get
the v2000z (Turion64)? I would like to have some user impressions from
these machines, specially the Turion64 as it is harder to find info
about it on the net.

I already looked at this review:

The Turion and the Pentium M are very close in terms of power consumption
so go with the Turion.

i've had one that lasted that long and a used one that must be about
that old now. it's a thinkpad 560z.

64bit doesn't mean much unless you have a buttload of ram. can you
put 4gb in these laptops? and, considering the expense and battery
drain, do you want to? if not, it's not worth worrying about.

That's not the whole story though. The processor is only one power
consumer. Intel has taken some pains to put together a chipset and
peripherals to match the low power consumption of the Pentium M while AMD
has concentrated on the processors and left the chipsets to third parties.
Far as I know there aren't any AMD64 chipsets optimized for low power, so
even if the power consumption of the processors is the same the power
consumption of the machine as a while may higher for the AMD.

I have been pondering over the same question for some time now but
have just taken the plunge and got an Acer aspire 5024WMLi which is
Turion based. All I can say is I feel I have made the right choice -
it is by far the fastest laptop I have ever used - it copes with my
digital video editing with ease and this is probably the most
demanding thing I will ever use it for - and battery life is
sufficient for me at around 3 hours.

In my opinion - the Turion based systems are beter value for a given
specification.
