I am quite confused on what DDR3 OC1600/1333 on a motherboard means.

Does it mean that if I buy 1600mhz and place it into the pin, it will read it as 1333mhz until I set it to 1600mhz in BIOS?

OR

Does it mean I have to buy 1333mhz and overclock it to 1600mhz?
I heard 1333mhz ram is usually unstable OCed past 1400mhz.

DDR3 OC1600/1333 on a motherboard means, that the Motherboard will support 1333MHz RAM or 1600MHz RAM when you OC the rig. Meaning , not by default. The default speed is going to be less than those 2 in normal mode.

No, it does not mean that you can buy 1333MHz RAM and OC it to 1600MHz, that itself would be quiet a feat.

I think it'll read as 1333 until you change the settings. This is easy, though. What's the motherboard?

On most current motherboards the default standard memory speed is 1333 MHz.

Use of any memory frequency above 1333 MHz is considered OCed.

How the motherboard sets the memory speed depends on how the BIOS reads the SPD chip on the DIMMs and whether it is set by default to read and use the XMP profile from the DIMMs if the DIMMs have an XMP profile.

If there is no XMP profile the memory speed defaults initially to 1333 MHz and it is then up to you to manually overclock it to 1600 MHz if the DIMMs are actually rated for 1600 MHz.

Yup, preferably 1600MHz @1.5V and not the 1.6 volts ones....

Because it's less complicated....to set it up,especially for a person new to BIOS setting and RAM tweaking it becomes a mammoth of a task explaining how to....
And it gives you more headroom to OC later .
