My kids computer had 12 virus.
After Norton got em all, still many items would not work.
i.e. the sound card would not produce.
Later I checked services.msc and found ALL items have been disabled.
If I change one to manual or auto, later it goes back to diasabled.
WHY?
Can I select numerous entries and set them to manual or auto as required?

Scott, if all of your services have been disabled I doubt that Norton
got them all.

Cleaning a virus removes infected files. It cannot repair "residual"
damage. After a virus is removed, it may be necessary to repair or even
completely reinstall the operating system.

I'm inclined to agree with the other response, that there may still be an
active intrusion on the system, because your change in settings is not
persisting.

 This is the result of serious malware which (at least temporarily) evades detection from even the better anti-viruses. I would recommend saving critical data to another partition or harddrive and performing a clean install of your operating system. I am running Windows 2000, which is prone to Windows Messenger UDP attacks. I am concerned that this malware is still very alive and kicking and is associated with Trojans of very high risk. The Trojans hide in .exe files and are picked up by AV's which use heuristic analysis as soon as they try to execute. These Trojans are currently very active on the net and therefore it is advisable to save your AV programs to your backup partition and reinstall them and activate before reconnecting to the internet. Very worrying for PC security!!!

make sure that you are logged as admin first to make adjustments if not
download avg rootkit free to see if you have one of the harder to detect viruses. Be sure to goto safe mode to install and run the prog.
