I've been after a notebook for a while, but recently came across the
opportunity to purchase a 1.5Ghz Acer C301XCi tablet/laptop hybrid
http://tinyurl.com/qsmf for around the same price as normal Centrino laptop.

Pricewise, it looks a good deal. But I'm not sure if the tablet functions
would be a bonus or a compromise for normal laptop functions. My main
priorities are for a powerful, light unit with good battery life and
bluetooth. At AU$2,400 (c. US$1,600) it looks good, and I'm sure I'd find
some of the touchscreen tablet facilities useful. It's heavy for a tablet,
but as a laptop, looks reasonable at 2.7kg (6 lbs).

So has anyone got, seen or used one in practice?

In general, Tablets (ie that run Windows XP Tablet PC Edition) are not
touchscreen but have digitizers and special pens. That said, Tablets are
*wonderful*. Check out www.tabletpc2.com for a comparison of different
models.

Three of us at our office have Acer 302 models which is similar to the 301.
We all love it. As you said, it is heavy compared to most tablets, but
reasonable for a laptop, and that is because it has a larger screen (14.1" )
than most tablets, and also a built-in DVD-CD drive wheas most other tablets
do not. We tried the smaller models and preferred the larger Acer because
for us we wanted a desktop replacement and the larger screen and built-in
drive was more important than the extra weight. As in most things, your
choice will depend on how you want to use it. All I can say is that working
with a tablet is MUCH better than working with a regular laptop or desktop
computer.

even better, the C302 model has a built-in DVD+-R(W)
writer.

....and more important, for what you want to use it. I primarily wanted
a full-featured notebook (good processor, larger display, built-in optical
drive, larger hard disk, etc.) with tablet pc functionality - that's why I
took the C302 as well. But if you want to primarily use it for note-taking
jobs, etc. I would recommend one with a smaller display and less weight.

full ACK!! I never want a notebook without tablet pc functionality
again (except for running Windows Server 2003 on it.. :-))

depends on what you do at your desktop computer. For
work, like developing, image editing or DTP, a desktop
computer would be better.

I purchase an Acer C301XCi in December. I am very pleased with it. I have
been using it every day for the past 8 months and it works well. The large
LCD display makes it easy to read.

The tablet PC features enhance the regular Windows XP Pro on a laptop. I've
had laptops of one sort or another for the last 12 years. I've had my tablet
since April. I will not buy another laptop without the tablet PC feature
set.

Fascinated by Acer's hybrid, I ask a silly or curious question: does it have
2 screens, digital and non-digital touchscreen? One for a Wacom pen and
another for a stylus?
Or is there a switch to "switch" types of screens? along with a 14" screen
and built-in CDrom, etc?
By the bye, Acer's hybrid may be the only way to raise the anemic sales of
Tablets, and bring TPCs into the mainstream. It is called integration
winning over segregation: it got the Blacks their victories, and analogously
or inversely the present separatism or self-imposed segregation of a
separate OS and machine will get TPCs as far as Malcolm X would have gotten
Blacks -- little enclaves here and there ("in upper N Y State or this or
that section, to try to carry the analogy further).
Go Acer! But don't abandon the smaller tablets: 10.4 " and even 8.4 and 7.2
.. But push hybrids. And install not only TXP but WinCE OSes, so that users
can have access to the wonderful stylus WinCE apps (tons of them), too.
