What's best way at picking memory?

Forum Overclocking : Memory What's best way at picking memory?

HI,

I don't know how to pick memory for my computer. I currently have 4 gigs in a 2x4 setup. I want to go to 16gig.

Should I buy the exact same set of RAM I bought before (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM) or should I buy a 4x4 set?

If new 4x4 set, which would you recommend? I have an (ASRock 870 Extreme3)

To be honest looking around on review sites and on newegg is usually the best way to start figuring out what is decent performance at a good price. 4x4 kits are usually the best way to get 16 or 32gb. Don't mix kits as it often hurts performance. I suggest a 4x4 1600 9.9.9.14 for like $90.

Could you point me to a link for such? I can only find 9-9-9-24.

Would this work for me?

Also, what is the difference between Dual Channel & Quad Channel?
The above link is Quad, but my MB says Dual Channel, would that make a difference?

3 Dual Channel Kits:

So I don't know if the first would work for me or if I'd have to pick from the bottom 3.

dual channel is what AMD and SB use, its the memory controller, 2 sticks will work just as fast as 4

Quad channel is servers and SB-E, requires 4 sticks for maximum speed. calling it a quad channel kit is just an easy way for new builders to easily find what they need for SB-E searching. realistically there is no difference between a quad channel kit and a 4x dual channel kit.

In teh 2nd paragraph, you ask about buying an exact same set of 2 x 2GB .... that will only get you to 8GB .... a bit short bof the 16GB you're looking for in the 1st paragraph.

Yeah, I realized that, the links I posted afterwards are for 16GB. I don't know why, but at first I thought I had 8GB (2x4) but apparently was wrong on that assumption.

Those 2x4 sticks will be given away once I upgrade, that being said, which would be the best choice for quality long lasting?

Think I decided on a set...Would this be compatible?

I had actually bought the RAM I posted the link almost 2 weeks ago now. Just put them in maybe 2-3 days ago. Everything seems to be great so far!

Since no one had answered whether or not it was compatible before I bought them I'm not going to pick a best answer. If I must, then Jakepf should get it as he did respond.
