I am in the market for a new paint job on my 2001 Infiniti QX4. I do not know a lot about paint so I do not want to get screwed. Body is in good shape. How much should I expect to spend on a quality paint job?

Several thousand. Most of the money is spent in the prep work, as the car has to have parts removed, other parts taped up with masking tape, and the car has to be sanded and primered. You can cut a lot of these costs by doing your own prep work.

As far as the cost of paint, it also depends on the kind of paints, if you want paints with fancy metal flakes, that gets expensive.

I would heavily recommend forgetting about it unless you plan to do your own prepwork or you have a substantial budget, quality paint jobs including all prep work can easily rival the book value of the vehicle.

Your vehicle assuming 120k miles and standard equipment in excellent condition is about 5600. Expect to spend at least half that. Maybe even more considering this isnt a little sedan we're talking about, its a full sized SUV.
