My friend wants to buy a HD2900XT, please no comments about that, and is wondering if his powersupply is strong enough. It's probaly a Branchless one, its 650watt and has 1 6pin pci-e connector. As i've read the 2900XT needs 2 of those . Whats the best solution? He doesn't want to buy a new psu to be honest.

A model number would be great if you can give us one.

If it works, leave it alone.

Tell him to get a 8800GT then, lol.

The amps are a bit low on the 12v rails. I remember 2900XT actually requires quite a bit of power. If he really wants to try though, he can just get a 4-pin molex to a pci-e converter cable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6812201004 . I vaguely remember 2900XT requiring an 8 pin and a 6 pin, it's been 2 years that I helped a friend put his computer together with a 2900XT.

Ouch, I see. Anyone knows where to get a 8 pin pci-e connector in the netherlands? the card is ASUS Radeon HD 2900 XT.

The deliver 2 x 6 pin pci-e connector, why should they? Does a 6 pin work fine on an 8 one too?

More Information

It needs at least two 6 pin PCIe connectors. If you use two 6 pin plugs, you won't be able to overclock it using AMDs drivers. If you wish to overclock it
(using the drivers), you need to use a 6 pin and an 8 pin PCIe plug. If my memory serves, the six pin plug should fit in the 8 pin socket, it will simply have two holes open.

I'm not 100% sure that the PSU is enough. You usually can't just add the two numbers together. IF the PSU can output 33A on the 12V rail, you should have enough. For example however, my SP 450W PSU can do 18A for both 12V rails, but together it can only provide about 24A. If you added the numbers together, it should be able to do 36. If you can, do some checking on the PSU to see what its capable of.

I agree with the others BTW, get a different card.

Don't need the 8 pin connector, its only for the overdrive from catalyst to work. If u don't want overdrive then u only need 2 x 6 pin connectors.
I have this card and is power hungry but operates very smooth with my HEC 500W psu.
The only reason your frient wants this card is because has Video Input which is rare for high end cards.
